Phil Kessel's development impresses Leafs | 05/16/2013 11:50 AM
NewsToronto's brass was thrilled with the play of Phil Kessel this season.
Impact"From a development standpoint, what we would say is the biggest plus, because there were a lot of pluses, is probably the play of Phil Kessel," Leafs vice-president of hockey operations Dave Poulin said on Wednesday. "Not only in the playoffs and in that series, but throughout the year. He took his game to a different level. He did it physically and he did it in all three zones and he played hard (against the Bruins)." Much was made about Kessel's past struggles versus his old team heading into the first round, but he put those talks to rest by netting four goals and recording six points in the series. The 25-year-old winger has one year left on his current deal, so an extension could be in the works as soon as this summer.
Kessel: 'I don't know what happened to us' | 05/14/2013 11:30 AM
NewsPhil Kessel wasn't ready to look at the bright side after the Leafs were ousted in Game 7 of their first-round series.
ImpactWhile some were able to find a silver lining, Kessel wasn't ready to do that after being a part of a monumental collapse that saw the Leafs blow a three-goal lead in the third period. "How can you look at the positives after a game like that?" Phil Kessel said. "I don't know what happened to us. 4-1, you can't lose that game," said Kessel. "Obviously we'll have the summer to think about it, work hard and get back at it next year." Kessel had four goals and two helpers in the seven-game series.
Bruins' rally denies Kessel a storybook end | 05/13/2013 10:55 PM
NewsPhil Kessel's goal was poised to be the game winner before the Boston Bruins tied Game 7 in the final minute and then won 5-4 in overtime.
ImpactKessel's goal made it 3-1 and looked to be the game-winning goal entering the final two minutes of the third period. It surely would've been a sweet moment for Kessel, whose history with the Bruins franchise and Boston fan base is impossible to ignore. Perhaps even worse for Toronto fans, Tyler Seguin, who was taken with one of the picks acquired in the Kessel trade, had the primary assist on Patrice Bergeron's overtime winner.

Phil Kessel scores in second straight game | 05/06/2013 10:54 PM
NewsPhil Kessel found the back of the net for the second straight game, scoring a power-play goal 47 seconds into the third period of Toronto's 5-2 loss Monday night.
ImpactKessel and Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle took full advantage of having last change at home Monday night. The pair did everything they could to keep Kessel away from Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara, who's been stalking Kessel ever since the winger was traded to the Leafs. While it sounds cruel to say, the Maple Leafs will need more out of Kessel and the rest of their forwards if they're going to even the series at 2 on Wednesday night.

The goal was the first even-strength tally registered by Kessel against Boston since his arrival in Toronto three seasons ago.
Phil Kessel avoids media Monday | 04/30/2013 11:22 AM
NewsPhil Kessel has never been one to soak up the spotlight and the media shy winger dodged reporters on Monday.
ImpactThe decision wasn't the best call since it will only draw more attention to Kessel, who is already a focal point of Toronto's opening-round series against Boston. It's not like anything he would have said would end up being bulletin board material, but he still should've faced the media. Kessel ended the regular season on a scoring tear, but his struggles against his former team have been well documented. It will be interesting to see if his can silence his critics or if the additional attention will be too much for him. Either way the Leafs will need more than just Kessel producing to beat Boston.

Kessel might only have 14 goals on the year, but he still has the rare ability to take over a game. James van Riemsdyk notched a goal and chipped in with an assist, while Ryan O'Byrne potted his first goal as a Leaf.

ImpactKessel didn't have a goal for the first 10 games of the season, but the skilled sniper now has six in 15 games. There's still room for upside here: Kessel ranks eighth in the league in shots on goal but he's scoring at just over a six percent rate. Even with the goal slump, he still has 20 points on the year. James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak each had a goal and an assist. The other goal scorers were Nazem Kadri and Jay McClement. Dion Phaneuf chipped in with two helpers.

Agent:Kessel would play out career with Leafs | 02/13/2013 12:58 PM
NewsPhil Kessel's agent, Wade Arnott, told a Toronto radio station Wednesday morning that he believes the Maple Leafs sniper wants to stay with the organization for his entire career.
Impact"This young man lives and breathes hockey. He was very excited to come here four years ago," Arnott told Sportsnet 590 The FAN. "I think if you asked Phil today, he'd love to finish his career here in Toronto. But it's still young in his career right now." The 25-year-old winger has one year left on his contract, which will earn him $5.4 million, after the 2013 campaign. GM Dave Nonis hasn't talked about his plans regarding the team's top goal-scoring threat, but some in the Toronto media believe the team would be better off trading Kessel. However, that is a scenario that might only play out if his contract demands are deemed to be too steep. Kessel has two goals and five assists in his last four games.

Phil Kessel trade rumors out of control | 02/09/2013 2:24 PM
NewsRumors circulating about a possible Phil Kessel trade have been blown way out of proportion.
Globe and Mail
ImpactAlthough Kessel has had trouble scoring so far this season, he has played strong two-way hockey. Despite a buzz on the street that Kessel is on the trade block, we do not believe the Maple Leafs are ready to move him. The sniper's five-year deal with the club expires in July 2014, meaning that Kessel technically can sign an extension in five months. This is not a front burner issue for the Buds or for Kessel and his agent Wade Arnott and will not move the club to trade him at this time. Take the Kessel trade rumors with a grain of salt.
Kessel thrilled to get monkey off his back | 02/08/2013 12:21 PM
NewsAs expected, Phil Kessel was thrilled to finally get the monkey off his back with his first goal.
ImpactIt only took 11 games and 46 shots on goal, but he finally got the job done. "I had a smile," Kessel said. "She's been a long time." Leafs coach Randy Carlyle added: "Goal scorers are streaky and you hope this is the start of something for him. Very few guys can put the puck where he did. Many can try. Only a few can do it." If you can get Kessel on the cheap, we'd recommend trying to pry him away as he should get hot here very soon.
Phil Kessel finally ends goal-scoring drought | 02/08/2013 1:09 AM
NewsPhil Kessel finally scored his first goal of the season to give Toronto a 3-2 victory against Winnipeg on Thursday night.
ImpactHe scored at the 15:52 mark of the third period on a Leafs power play to snap a 2-2 tie an end his 10-game goalless drought. Phil Kessel still goalless after 10 games | 02/06/2013 1:34 PM
NewsPhil Kessel contributed two assists in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Washington, but his goalless slump reached 10 games.
ImpactHe leads the league with 42 shots and has six helpers on the year, but he still hasn't been able to break through and find the back of the net. Despite the fact that the Toronto sniper has been firing blanks, he has still been a decent fantasy contributor and this slump shouldn't be expected to last much longer. Stay patient with him.
Ovechkin offers advice to struggling Kessel | 02/05/2013 6:48 PM
NewsAlex Ovechkin has some advice for Phil Kessel, who hasn't scored a goal in nine games.
Impact"I think after a couple games, you think like, `OK, I'm gonna have a chance and I'm gonna score,'" Ovechkin said. "After nine games you feel like big pressure on your shoulder, especially in Toronto. The fans, the media all over him I think. I just wanna give him advice like, `Don't listen nobody. Just play your game.' Everybody knows he can score; he's a top player out there. Lots of players play against him very carefully and give him more pressure. He just have to handle it." Ovechkin is struggling too, though not to the same extent as Kessel. Both of them should bounce back in a big way in the not too distant future.
Phil Kessel still can't find back of the net | 02/02/2013 11:39 PM
NewsPhil Kessel finished with three shots on goal in the Maple Leafs' 1-0 loss versus the Bruins on Saturday night.
ImpactWith 36 shots on goal, Kessel has certainly gotten enough chances this year, but he's still yet to light the lamp after putting up four straight 30-goal seasons. The goals should come very soon, and when they do, they'll probably come in bunches.
Columnist says Leafs should move Phil Kessel | 01/28/2013 1:57 PM
NewsDamien Cox of the Toronto Star believes that the time to trade Phil Kessel may be now for the Maple Leafs.
ImpactCox says that the removal of Kessel would help new GM Dave Nonis put his stamp on the team and take away an albatross from the Brian Burke era. He also currently comes at cap hit of $5.4 million cap hit, which is affordable given his goal-scoring ability, but following the 2013-14 season he is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent and will likely be seeking a raise. The team could also get a good return for Kessel considering he is only 25 years old and has already cracked the 30-goal barrier four times. However, at this stage if you asked the Leafs about dealing him then we would assume they would say that it's not something they are looking into.
Phil Kessel's first goal bound to come soon | 01/26/2013 12:05 PM
NewsPhil Kessel doesn't have a goal on the year, but that's not a great indication of how he's played.
ImpactKessel scored 37 times last season and hasn't had the same good fortune in 2013 despite some great chances lately and a team-high 20 shots on net. "All Phil really needs is a little bit of puck luck, that's all," said Nazem Kadri. "He's getting to the right spots, he's shooting the puck. Maybe the first one's got to be a dirty one. He's got to get in that dirty area, and he's gone there all year. It's just a matter of a bounce here and there, the next thing you know it's in the back of the net." Kessel is extremely streaky, meaning his first could lead to a bunch more in short order.
Phil Kessel, Lupul off to slow starts | 01/22/2013 12:19 PM
NewsPhil Kessel fired seven shots at Buffalo keeper Ryan Miller on Monday night, but for a second straight contest he came up empty in the goal department.
ImpactKessel led the Leafs with 37 tallies last season, but is seeking his first goal of the 2013 campaign. He collected two assists in Toronto's opening win against Montreal though. Kessel's linemate Joffrey Lupul is also still trying to get into a groove this year, as he has been held pointless after the team's first two contests. The Leafs will need both of them to get going soon because their offense has struggled in the early part of the season.
Phil Kessel gets two points in opener | 01/20/2013 12:08 AM
NewsPhil Kessel registered two power-play assists in Toronto's 2-1 win on Saturday.
ImpactNazem Kadri and Tyler Bozak each scored for Toronto. Michael Kostka and Dion Phaneuf each assisted on one of the Leafs' two goals.
Coach Carlyle reunits Toronto's top line | 01/15/2013 12:56 PM
NewsPhil Kessel rejoined Joffrey Lupul and Tyler Bozak at practice on Monday.
Impact"We played well together last year, but we need to be better this year," said Kessel. "It obviously wasn't good enough last year." Kessel and Lupul especially displayed plenty of chemistry and they formed one of the most dangerous tandems in the league before Lupul got injured. Kessel recorded 37 goals and 82 points, which placed him sixth overall in the NHL in both categories, in 82 games last season. Carlyle wants him to commit to playing under his defensive scheme, but he won't limit the creativity of his top gun.
Brian Burke's farewell: "We didn't win" | 01/12/2013 3:41 PM
NewsBrian Burke was his usual blunt self during a going-away press conference as the former GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Toronto Maple Leafs
ImpactBurke had plenty of interesting things to say even if he didn't exactly burn bridges. He had amusing comments such as "I'm Irish. I'm stubborn. I'm not going to change," yet his most telling assessment was "we didn't win." Even his detractors will likely miss his wordy responses.
