|Assets:||Has great size and reach. Is capable of playing a ton of minutes in all game situations. Usually keeps things simple in the defensive zone. Complements offensive defensemen well.|
|Flaws:||Plays too much of a passive game from the back end. Lacks ideal mobility for the blueline position at the highest level. Will never put up offensive numbers to match his size.|
|Career Potential:||Gangly stay-at-home depth defenseman.|

Jeff Schultz's new deal is worth $1.7 million | 07/01/2014 10:13 AM
NewsJeff Schultz's two-year deal with the Kings is worth $1.7 million.
ImpactIt's a one-way deal, although so was Schultz's last contract and that didn't stop Los Angeles from burying him in the minors for most of the 2013-14 campaign. At best, Schultz will be a seventh defenseman with the Kings at the start of the season.

NewsThe Kings have re-signed defenseman Jeff Schultz to a two-year contract.

ImpactSchultz got some action with the Kings due to injuries in the postseason, but he spent the better part of the year with Manchester of the AHL. He carries no fantasy value and is nothing more than a depth player for Los Angeles.
Coach Sutter happy with play of Jeff Schultz | 05/18/2014 9:04 AM
NewsCoach Darryl Sutter has been pleased with the play of defenseman Jeff Schultz.
ImpactSchultz spent most of the regular season with Manchester of the AHL but was pressed into duty in the playoffs with injuries to both Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr. Mitchell may be close to returning but the play of Schultz defensively should keep him in the lineup for now.
Jeff Schultz expected to play on Monday | 05/05/2014 8:21 AM
NewsJeff Schultz is expected to replace the injured Robyn Regehr on the Los Angeles blueline Monday.
Los Angeles Daily News
ImpactSchultz spent most of the season in the AHL playing for Manchester. "He just said, 'Just go out there and play,'" Schultz said of coach Darryl Sutter, who had a chat with him on Sunday. "It's hard to replace a guy like Robyn, but I feel like I'm capable of doing a similar job of what he can do." Schultz had two goals and 13 points in 67 games with Manchester so do not expect anything out of him offensively in the playoffs.

NewsThe Los Angeles Kings have summoned Jeff Schultz.
ImpactSchultz isn't expected to play in Game 7. It's believed he was called up as an insurance policy, because the Kings are already without defenseman Willie Mitchell.

ImpactSchultz was bought out by the Washington Capitals, so things just haven't gone very well for him lately. Perhaps he'd have better luck on a defense that isn't quite as deep and talented as the Kings' corps.
Jeff Schultz is back in NHL as Kings mainstay | 09/28/2013 9:45 AM
NewsJeff Schultz, who fell out of favor with the Washington Capitals last season, has earned a spot on the defense corps with the Los Angeles Kings, coach Darryl Sutter says.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactSchultz requested a trade from the Caps last year but no one was willing to take his $2.75-million annual cap hit and he ended up getting bought out and signing a one-year, $700,000 deal with the Kings in July. After watching him in the exhibition season, Sutter believes Schultz will be a valuable addition for the Kings. "Jeff's been a guy that's had to adjust to how we play," Sutter said. "I said before, it's not easy for a guy to come from the East to the West, first off. There's big adjustments between teams, not just in getting to know players but big adjustment in terms of style of play and in terms of responsibility in certain parts of the game."

ImpactSchultz fell out of favor in Washington to the point where he requested a trade. No one was willing to take on his $2.75 million annual cap hit and he ended up getting bought out. Schultz will probably have an opportunity to fight for a spot on the third pairing, but that will partially depend on the health of Willie Mitchell.

ImpactThis is a precursor to a compliance buyout, which means Schultz will become an unrestricted free agent. GM George McPhee previously admitted he was trying to trade Schultz but clearly didn't get enough of an offer to actually move him. Schultz has one year and $3 million left on his contract. The Capitals will save $2.75 million on their cap if they buy him out.
Capitals GM: We'll try to trade Jeff Schultz | 06/01/2013 3:46 PM
NewsCapitals GM George McPhee confirmed that he's trying to trade Jeff Schultz.
ImpactSchultz requested a trade in mid-March and made his desire to be moved public this week. "If someone wants to be traded, we'll trade him," McPhee said. "It doesn't matter who it is. If you don't want to play for us, we'll move you. Washington is a great place to play- it's a great team, a great city, we've got great fans and if you don't want to be part of it, we'll move you." McPhee gave Schultz credit for coming and putting in the trade request directly rather than going through his agent. Although McPhee didn't address the possibility of buying out Schultz contract, it might make sense for him to do so if they can't find a willing trading partner. Schultz comes with a $2.75 million cap hit and would likely serve as a seventh defenseman with Washington if he stayed for the 2013-14 campaign.
Jeff Schultz confirms his trade request | 05/31/2013 10:23 AM
NewsJeff Schultz confirmed that he wants the Washington Capitals to trade him.
ImpactSchultz played in just 26 games in 2013 and wasn't used in the playoffs. He averaged just 14:15 minutes per contest. "My agent and I thought there has got to be somewhere else where a team needs a player like myself and I can be utilized a lot more than I was here," Schultz said. "It was like I was a young first year player again with them. They didn't have that trust in me that they could put me out there in tough situations or even in the third period." If the Capitals can't find a new home for him, they might just use a compliance buyout to spare themselves of his $2.75 million cap hit.
Report: Jeff Schultz wants out of Washington | 05/30/2013 3:39 PM
NewsJeff Schultz reportedly wants to be traded because of the lack of playing time he has been receiving over the past two seasons.
Brian McNally on Twitter
ImpactSchultz dressed in just 26 games with the Capitals during the truncated season and he was a healthy scratch for the vast majority of the matches he missed. He went through a similar situation in 2011-12 when he skated in 54 contests. According his agent, Jarrett Bousquet, Schultz asked to be moved in mid-March.
Jeff Schultz gets out of the press box | 03/30/2013 2:53 PM
NewsAfter spending four straight games in the press box, Jeff Schultz will be back in the Capitals' lineup on Saturday.
Impact"Sometimes you ask a guy to take a step back and re-evaluate themselves and we've got two games in two nights and we need him. We need his size, we need him to be a force and hopefully a little bit of a wakeup call," said Capitals Coach Adam Oates. Schultz is a defensive defenseman with three points in 24 games this season.
