Mike Green finally scores first goal of 13-14 | 12/03/2013 10:17 PM
NewsMike Green scored his first goal of the season, but the Washington Capitals fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday.
ImpactGreen now has that single tally on 66 SOG. His overall offense has been solid (13 points in 25 games), although not up to his once-elite standards. His 28 PIM are nice, though.
Green's role diminishing in WSH? | 11/28/2013 2:52 AM
NewsMike Green was hobbled by a groin injury during the early part of November, but his numbers since his return aren't anything to be ecstatic about.
ImpactGroin injuries are never a good thing for hockey players, so there may be an element of "easing him" back into the groove of things from the coaching staff's perspective. But Green's 21.6 percent share of the Caps' power play opportunities should send a pretty big warning sign to his owners. John Carlson has garnered the lion's share of the man advantage chances during the last two contests as he's chewed up 78.4 percent of Washington's PP time. Things haven't worked out as planned for the Caps as they dropped both of their games by being outscored by a margin of 8-5. Green owners are probably feeling a little bit tight around the collar, so keep a close eye on this situation as it progresses.

Mike Green remains questionable Wednesday | 11/19/2013 5:23 PM
NewsCapitals coach Adam Oates isn't entirely sure if Mike Green (lower body) will be ready to return on Wednesday.
ImpactGreen practiced on Tuesday, but it sounds like he might need more time getting into game shape. "He's missed a lot of time and it's a big game" Oates said. "I don't want to put him in a situation where he's behind the 8-ball. He hasn't been able to do a lot of cardio, so I'm a little worried about his conditioning." Washington will face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.

ImpactGreen has missed two straight games, but he might return on Wednesday. "This is the first day I felt good as far as the injury and I was able to actually push and skate and try to get my wind back," Green said. "Just a matter of getting back into game shape and that's it."
Washington Capitals place Mike Green on IR | 11/17/2013 5:31 PM
NewsThe Washington Capitals put defenseman Mike Green on the injured reserve on Sunday.
Katie Carrera on Twitter
ImpactThe good news is that he wasn't placed on the LTIR, however, which means that he could return as soon as Wednesday if he's healthy enough to play. Green has 11 points - all assists - in 19 games. It's surprising he doesn't have a goal yet with 50 SOG.
Mike Green's injury a bruise not his groin | 11/17/2013 9:22 AM
NewsThe current injury suffered by Mike Green is a bruise and not another groin injury.
ImpactThat's great news for Green fantasy owners as the defenseman is a top point producer when healthy. Green skated for around 30 minutes on Saturday and he looked better than he did Friday. ImpactGreen has nine points (all helpers) and 14 PIM with 35 SOG in 14 GP. The 28-year-old seems due for a goal, especially with his shooting ability. Regardless, he's been having a nice resurgence in 2013-14.
Mike Green struggles Tuesday | 10/23/2013 11:01 AM
NewsThe Washington Capitals benched Mike Green starting at the midway point of the third period in their 5-4 shootout victory against the Winnipeg Jets.
ImpactGreen had a rough night, playing a role in a pair of Jets goals. "I didn't think Greenie was having his best night," Capitals coach Adam Oates said. "The other guys were going pretty good, it got late in the game and I think [assistant coach] Calle [Johansson] just went with Carly and Steveo for a couple shifts." Oates doesn't see this as a long-term issue. He has five assists and a minus-six rating in nine games this season.
Green: Capitals still have a lot to prove | 09/16/2013 10:47 AM
NewsMike Green feels the Washington Capitals haven't proven that they're a great team yet.
ImpactThe Capitals have secured a playoff berth in six consecutive seasons, but haven't advanced past the second round in that span. "We've been there every year," he said. "We've been a team that competes. Making it to the playoffs is hard. It's not easy to do in this league. We've proven ourselves in that aspect, that we're a good team. But we haven't proven that we're a great team and the only way to do that is by winning the Stanley Cup." On paper the Capitals look like a team capable of going deep into the playoffs, but that's been true for quite a few preseasons in a row.
Mike Green feels more well-rounded now | 08/28/2013 4:19 PM
NewsMike Green feels he has developed as a player since failing to make the cut for Canada's roster at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Impact"After I wasn't invited I worked hard to develop my game so that I would be looked at for the next Olympics. That's where I'm at," Green said. "I think that I was a little one dimensional before being just an offensive defenseman and I've really been concentrating on keeping my plus-minus up and playing strong defense." Injuries have forced him to miss 93 of the Capitals' last 212 regular season games, but he finished the 2013 campaign healthy and was able to focus on adding muscle rather than rehabilitating some issue. Team Canada has several right-handed blueliners who are believed to be locks for the 2014 squad, so it might be tough for Green to play in Sochi. Still, if he can stay off the sidelines and produce then he could work his way into the conversation.
Caps expecting big things from D Mike Green | 08/17/2013 9:06 AM
NewsMike Green was an offensive force in 2013 with 12 goals to lead all National Hockey League defensemen but the his team, the Washington Capitals, believe he can win the Norris Trophy in the coming season.
ImpactIt can take a year before an athlete fully recovers from sports hernia surgery. Green had his on Jan. 17, 2012. Maybe it's no surprise that he exploded during the second half of last season. Those 12 goals and 14 assists (26 points) were impressive in a lockout-shortened campaign, but 19 of themcame after his return from a left groin injury on March 21. Add in the Stanley Cup playoff series against the New York Rangers and it was 12 goals and 11 assists in 26 games for Green. That was an astoundingly torrid stretch during a time when every game was critical to the Caps. "We all know what [Green] can do when he's healthy and feels good about himself," Caps goalie Braden Holtby said. "We've seen it before. He was there again." With his age-28 season upcoming, can Green build on the flashes of defensive maturity shown in his game in recent years and again provide elite offense? If it happens he can absolutely win a Norris Trophy.
Mike Green: There's a lot of work to be done | 05/07/2013 11:11 AM
NewsThe Capitals have already turned the page on their loss and are focusing on fixing their mistakes for Game 4.
Impact"It's unfortunate," Mike Green said after the team's 4-3 loss. "We wanted to be up three, but we have a lot of work to do and we knew we would." The Capitals got the first goal of the game, then the Rangers held three one-goal leads as the Caps answered back twice.
Mike Green scores for second straight game | 05/06/2013 11:30 PM
NewsMike Green followed up his game-winning goal Saturday with a tying goal late in the second period of Monday's eventual 4-3 loss to the Rangers.
ImpactAt the time of Green's goal, the Capitals were all over the Rangers after New York took a 2-1 lead earlier in period. Then, Green snapped a shot in between Henrik Lundqvist's glove and helmet and it looked as if the Capitals were going to turn the game around. Despite tying the game again in the third on a Jay Beagle goal, the Capitals couldn't convert on a 6-on-4 power play for nearly two minutes at the end of the game and now lead the series only 2-1 instead of 3-0.
"Game over" Green has knack for OT goals | 05/05/2013 10:00 AM
NewsMike Green's Capitals teammates have taken to calling him "game-over Green" due to his propensity to score game-winning goals.
ImpactGreen was humble after his most recent game-winner, which lifted the Caps to a 1-0 win over the New York Rangers Saturday afternoon. "I think the whole game was patience - whoever was going to make the mistake first," Green said. "Just a lucky one tonight. What an effort before we got that power play by the guys that were on the ice, pressuring their D. They had no choice but to try to go off the glass and they made a bad play." His most recent overtime winner was the 18th game-winner of the talented blueliner's career and the eighth of which that has come during extra time. That's an impressive track record, especially for a defenseman.

NewsMike Green scored the lone goal in Washington's 1-0 overtime win against the Rangers on Saturday.

Mike Green has hand in three goals in win | 04/27/2013 11:06 PM
NewsMike Green lit the lamp twice for the Capitals in their 3-2 overtime win against the Bruins on Saturday night.
ImpactGreen also had an assist, and he now has points in four straight games, seven altogether. When Green is healthy and going well, he is one of the best offensive-minded blueliners in the game. That he's playing so great now is a big plus for the Capitals entering the playoffs. Eric Fehr potted the game-winner, while Alex Ovechkin and Mike Ribeiro had two assists apiece.
More desperate Senators beat Capitals | 04/26/2013 11:08 AM
NewsThe Capitals earned one point against the Senators this season.
ImpactGranted, the Senators were playing for their playoff lives Thursday and the Capitals had already clinched, but the Sens currently are slated to face the Caps in the first round of the playoffs. Ottwa outshot the Capitals 25-4 in the third period and overtime. "They came to play tonight. They skate hard and they skate fast, they're on us and they put the pressure on and it's tough to create anything," Capitals defenseman Mike Green said. "But we just came out flat. I don't know what it is the last couple times we've played against them. But it's the way it's gone."

Mike Green nets two goals Tuesday | 04/03/2013 10:10 AM
NewsMike Green potted two goals on Tuesday night.
ImpactThe Washington defender has been sidetracked by injuries again this season, but he has been picking up steam lately with four goals and one assist in his past three games. Green isn't the impact player he used to be, but he should be productive for the remainder of the year if he can stay healthy.
Mike Green scores, assists in SO win | 03/30/2013 10:04 PM
NewsMike Green enjoyed a two-point night with a goal and an assist in the Capitals' 4-3 shootout win over the Sabres on Saturday.
ImpactGenerally speaking, when the defenseman is in the lineup, he's very productive. Problem is, he's always getting hurt and this year he hasn't found his stride. The 27-year-old has five goals and 10 points in 21 games this year. Alex Ovechkin also scored and had a whopping 10 shots on goal. Troy Brouwer also scored, and he had an assist.

Caps' Green will be game-time decision Thurs. | 03/21/2013 3:40 PM
NewsMike Green (groin) will be a game-time decision Thursday night.
ImpactThe defenseman expects to play but coach Adam Oates hasn't confirmed his presence in the lineup. Green skated without any limitations Thursday morning and tried to make his case that he's fine to play to the team's coaching and medical staffs. "That's the only thing that's been holding me out, not being able to move. Now that I've got my mobility back I'm good," Green said. "It's just limiting. I didn't have the mobility I need to play and when that's missing it's very tough, especially with the speed of the game. It was just a matter of me getting that back and now that I do I'm ready." It sounds like he'll play.

NewsMike Green (groin) skated with the Washington Capitals again Tuesday, but there is still no timetable for his return.
The Washington Times

Still a little bit of a ways away, but at least I'm back on the ice," Green said. Keep him reserved for now, but it does appear that Green is making progress.
Mike Green skates Friday | 03/09/2013 12:00 PM
NewsMike Greeen (groin) was back on the ice Friday morning.
ImpactAlthough that is good news, he was not with his teammates as he skated by himself. The Capitals are justifiably being cautious with their star defenseman. "I think he felt pretty good. I'll find out later from [head athletic trainer Greg Smith] after he ices down and all that and how he feels the next day," Caps' coach Adam Oates said. "You think it's healed but then as soon as you get real contact [it acts up again]. You can replicate as much as you want but until you get into a game in the heat of the moment and take an unguarded hit, you don't know." For now keep Green on your bench.

However, no one seems to know when he'll be healthy enough to get back on the ice without fear of aggravating the injury again.
Caps don't plan to shut down Mike Green yet | 03/04/2013 6:16 PM
NewsWashington coach Adam Oates doesn't know when Mike Green will be able to return from his aggravated groin injury, but he doesn't appear to hitting the panic button yet either.
ImpactHe was asked if the team has any immediate plans to shut Green down for an extended period of time to get him over his groin issue and he said: "I hope not. It's that injury that feels like it's healing. Maybe it's not. He played. I wouldn't say it was set back, he just doesn't feel comfortable, and we're just waiting for that moment where it's like, 'Okay, go again.' And we don't want it until he's closer to 100 percent."
Mike Green (groin) skips practice again | 03/04/2013 2:39 PM
NewsMike Green (groin) didn't skate at Monday's practice.
ImpactIt is the second straight workout he's missed since aggravating a groin injury last week. Green returned to the lineup on Feb. 27 from a groin ailment, but wasn't able to play at Winnipeg on Saturday and he didn't even travel with the team. Consider him day-to-day for now.
