Sens still waiting on Alfredsson's decision | 06/18/2013 7:25 PM
NewsThe Ottawa Senators have talked to captain Daniel Alfredsson about returning for another season, but the veteran forward hasn't made a decision yet regarding his future.
Impact"We have talked, I've talked to Alfie in the past couple of days," GM Bryan Murray said Tuesday. "I told him to take whatever time he needs and come back to me when you can -- as early as you can, that would help me -- but do whatever you have to do to satisfy your family to make sure you're ready to play." Alfredsson can become an unrestricted free agent on July 5, but if he decides to return then a contract should come together quickly with Ottawa.
Daniel Alfredsson honored by Leadership Award | 06/17/2013 9:58 AM
NewsDaniel Alfredsson considers winning the 2013 Mark Messier Leadership Award a "tremendous honor."
Impact"It's a great award because it recognizes all the work you do on and off the ice, and especially coming from a guy like Mark Messier, who exemplifies hard work and leadership in our game," Alfredsson said. The question now is whether or not he'll return for the 2013-14 campaign and he doesn't have an answer yet. If he decides he wants to extend his career, he should have no problem getting a new contract out of the Ottawa Senators.

ImpactKings captain Dustin Brown and Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews were the other nominees. Alfredsson is the longest serving active captain in the league, although it remains to be seen if he'll decide to come back for the 2013-14 campaign. Alfredsson's contract has expired and while Ottawa would love to re-sign him, Alfredsson wanted to take some time before deciding what to do next.
Alfredsson needs time to decide on future | 05/25/2013 6:39 PM
NewsDaniel Alfredsson hasn't decided on his future yet, but he still feels capable of contributing.
ImpactAlfredsson also still enjoys the game, so it sounds like the only thing that might lead him to retiring is his family. "I find the travel really tough, with four young kids at home," Alfredsson said. "And that's kind of what I struggle with, personally. Obviously, I will talk to my wife, to (general manager Bryan Murray), to (coach Paul MacLean), to see what they think." He reiterated that he will take some time before coming to a decision. It's a very safe bet that the Senators will jump at the chance to re-sign him if he wants to continue his career.
Too early to tell if Alfredsson will retire | 05/25/2013 10:36 AM
NewsIt is too early to determine if Daniel Alfredsson has played his last NHL game.
ImpactHe told the media before the Senators were eliminated by the Penguins Friday night that he still loved to be at the rink but that he did not appreciate the time he spends away from his young children."It's tough. It is. They [his children] enjoy me playing and watching games but for me personally, being away, missing a lot of stuff, it doesn't get easier", said Alfredsson. "I've had a lot of moments when it's been a lot of fun, there's no question. I thoroughly enjoy my job; I love what I do. But I can't say I enjoy every moment of it because I find the travel to be extremely tough. With a young family at home and time away, it doesn't get easier. But when I'm at the rink, I still enjoy what I do." We will monitor the Sens captain's decision about whether he continues his NHL career over the coming months.
Alfredsson still believes in his teammates | 05/23/2013 4:27 PM
NewsDaniel Alfredsson feels his comment about the Senators not being able to rally from a 3-1 series deficit against Pittsburgh was taken out of context.
Impact"Maybe I should have continued right away where I left off in my answer," he said. "I don't doubt for one second that we'll come out with a great effort (Friday night). It sounds like I had given up. If you ask anyone and they look at our series, I don't think there are too many people that would pick us right now. That's what I meant. We're still in the playoffs. It doesn't matter to me which way it's looked at. The guys in this room know enough about me. I believe in these guys ... I'm not going to change anything in how it's said. It's obvious to me that we're in tough." Anyone who said Alfredsson had given up went a little overboard, but he clearly understands that the Senators have their backs against the wall against a talented team.
Alfredsson doesn't think Sens can come back | 05/23/2013 11:22 AM
NewsDaniel Alfredsson isn't confident that Ottawa can come back from a 3-1 series deficit against Pittsburgh.
ImpactWhen he was asked if the Senators can win three straight games over the Penguins he said, "Probably not. I mean, with their depth and power play right now, it doesn't look too good for us." He believes the team will try their hardest in Game 5 Friday night back in Pittsburgh, but he was clearly dejected by Wednesday's 7-3 defeat. Alfredsson has generated two goals and two assists in his past three games and he'll need to shoulder the load again if Ottawa is going to extend their playoff run.

Ottawa was never likely to trade Alfredsson | 04/01/2013 10:41 AM
NewsEven if the Ottawa Senators weren't in the playoff race, they probably wouldn't have traded 40-year-old forward Daniel Alfredsson.
Impact"I don't think we would have made the decision," said Murray. "Alfie is a Senator and we'd like him to be that for the rest of his career. I don't think there was anytime, other than media speculation, that we were even considering anything with him. We're fortunate though that our team has played the way they are. We've got a good group of young people that play hard. Alfie and some of the veterans have really made a big impression on them. We've been the benefactors because of it." Once Alfredsson retires, which might happen this summer, the Senators will likely offer him the opportunity to remain in the organization in some other capacity. It's possible that the longtime captain will chose to pursue a coaching career.

Official twitter account of the Islanders
ImpactAt 40-years-old, the Senators Swedish captain ranks second on the team with 11 points (four goals, seven assists). Alfredsson has been one of the steadiest players since entering the league in 1995 and can still help fantasy owners that are playing in deeper leagues. He's probably the best Swedish forward to have ever played in the NHL after Peter Forsberg and Mats Sundin.
Daniel Alfredsson will likely stay in Ottawa | 03/01/2013 10:09 AM
NewsDaniel Alfredsson doesn't foresee himself playing anywhere else in his final season.
ImpactWith all of Ottawa's injuries, it continues to play well. Some thought maybe the Sens would entertain moving Alfredsson if they fell out of it, and so the captain could have a chance to go out on top, but that doesn't seem very likely now. "I've been here so long I can't see anything else, but also I never say never. And don't read anything into me saying that," said Alfredsson with a chuckle. "I just feel that this is where I belong and I'm having a lot of fun with this team, especially this year."

ImpactHe's upset for Karlsson, who soaks up big minutes for the Senators and was playing very well during the 2013 season, and he was not pleased with Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke whose skate caused the laceration to Karlsson's left Achilles tendon. "I don't know it it's intent to injure, but I don't know why you would hit somebody like that in that situation," said Alfredsson.

"Overall, it was a good effort, but we wish we could have had this one. ... It's encouraging that we keep on improving and playing the way we want to play."

ImpactThe Sens could use his scoring acumen against a loaded Penguins team. Alf has three assists in four games so far this season, showing that he can still be fantasy-relevant at 40 years old. Perhaps the occasional break will do him some good, anyway.
Daniel Alfredsson could have solid season | 01/07/2013 10:15 PM
NewsDaniel Alfredsson thinks the shortened season could work in his favour.
ImpactThe 40-year-old captain has been training throughout the lockout, and is confident that his groin and hip flexors will be able to handle the shortened season. "If I could choose I would play 48 or 50 games every year," Alfredsson said. "Not just because I'm older, but because I think it would make for better hockey and a better product overall. For me selfishly it's not a bad thing." Alfredsson showed he can still compete at the NHL level last season, with 27 goals and 59 points in 75 games.

"We have a very good program overall in the country which allows us to have success at this level."
Alfredsson waits for fate of 2012-13 season | 01/03/2013 11:07 AM
NewsDaniel Alfredsson thinks "it's just nice to know that we're going to know, either way" as far as the fate of the 2012-13 campaign is concerned.
ImpactThe NHL and union have about another week to either save the 2012-13 campaign or lose it entirely. "They're talking," Alfredsson said. "It seems like real negotiating, which is good. Hopefully something gets done so we can get back to work." If not, Alfredsson's storied career could end with a whimper. This is the last season of his current contract with the Ottawa Senators and while they will surely re-sign him if he so desires, he might simply decide to hang up his skates at the age of 40.
