|Flaws:||It's not his style of play, but he would benefit greatly from utilizing his 6-4, 212-pound frame more to his advantage. Must continue to improve his skating, which is below-average by NHL standards. Injuries have been a problem.|

Eric Fehr playing with Alex Ovechkin | 01/12/2014 10:42 AM
NewsEric Fehr has been playing alongside Alex Ovechkin of late.
ImpactIt's been quite a year for Fehr who was in Finland a year ago, trying to get another NHL contract after his hometown Winnipeg Jets let him go as a UFA at the end of the 2011-12 season. "I think playing in Finland really helped me to be a guy that they want the puck on your stick and to get the feeling of that again. When you play third-, fourth-line minutes for [seven] years, you almost lose the feel of the puck and how to create space and how to hang on to it and make plays," Fehr said. "I think that kind of clicked in my mind again that I can do this and showed me the ways I need to do it again. When I came back here I was playing with a different kind of confidence and reminded back of what I could do." Fehr has eight goals and 19 points in 35 games this season and his fantasy value definitely gets a boost if he continues to play with Ovechkin.

ImpactViews of the hit from multiple angles (video at the bottom of the post) shows Gudbranson raise his right shoulder and elbow to make direct contact with Fehr's face. Fehr immediately went to the Capitals' dressing room with 16:16 gone in the second period, but after passing the SCAT2 evaluation test that is required by the NHL's concussion protocol, the winger returned to the game in the third period. "I don't know what his intent was exactly, I haven't seen the replay so I'm not going to comment on that. It didn't feel good," Fehr said. "That was a close call, definitely. It definitely stung me. I think I dodged a bullet there." Whether Gudbranson dodges a bullet is another question. The NHL's disciplinary folks will look at the hit and a two-game suspension wouldn't be surprising.

ImpactHe'll play alongside Mikhail Grabovski and Troy Brouwer in his first appearance since Nov. 2. Martin Erat will be a healthy scratch to make room for Fehr. "Chemistry, one thing. It was time for Fehrsie to get a game," coach Adam Oates said. "Marty's been fighting it a little bit, in my mind. Sometimes when you sit up top you get a fresh perspective. It's not permanent, just trying to shake it up a little bit." Fehr has one goal and five assists in 14 games this season.
Eric Fehr gets opportunity with Ovechkin out | 10/31/2013 3:43 PM
NewsEric Fehr is projected to play on Washington's top power-play unit on Friday with Alex Ovechkin out of the lineup.
Impact"I don't think they'll be covering me quite as closely as they cover Ovi," Fehr said. "Ovi does his thing out there and I haven't had the opportunity. He makes it look pretty easy. He's been doing that for many years. I'm not going to be shooting it like him, I'll have my own spin on that position and hopefully it works out." He's slated to play with Nicklas Backstrom and Martin Erat on the top line.

Eric Fehr to make Caps, but at what position? | 09/28/2013 10:30 AM
NewsEric Fehr is a good bet to be one of the Washington Capitals' forwards when their regular season starts next week but his position remains uncertain.
ImpactWashington coach Adam Oates opted to play the 28-year-old veteran at center in his first two exhibition appearances to see if the usual right wing could pick up the adjustments required of the most versatile position on the ice. Fehr held his own as a center, but since returning to the wing two games ago, he's recorded four goals and an assist and shown a confidence with the puck when presented with scoring opportunities. Even though it was a short-lived trial, Oates hasn't ruled out the possibility of using Fehr at center. "Fehrsie asked me today `Is the experiment over?' No," Oates said. "You're collecting information, you're doing the best you can and you don't want to set those guys back. But I said to Fehrsie, `You got [five] goals, you're playing good hockey - don't worry about it. We're fine. I know what you can do on right wing." Fehr is open to all options.

Eric Fehr plays as a center on Monday | 09/17/2013 10:46 AM
NewsWashington's experiment with Eric Fehr at center continued with Monday's preseason game.
ImpactFehr has been playing with Joel Ward and Jason Chimera. "I definitely had some ups and downs," Fehr said. "I was better than I thought I'd be in the faceoff circle. But after that, getting organized was a little more difficult for me. That's something I'll have to work on." There's still a good chance Fehr will start the 2013-14 campaign on the right wing.
Eric Fehr practices as a center | 09/13/2013 11:05 AM
NewsEric Fehr served as a center during the first day of the Capitals' training camp.
ImpactFehr played alongside Jason Chimera and Joel Ward. He doesn't have any experience as a center at the NHL level. We'll see if that sticks, but we wouldn't be surprised if it's just an experiment and he shifts back to the right wing before the regular season starts.

NewsEric Fehr skated on the second line with Mike Ribeiro and Troy Brouwer Sunday night.
Impact"We've got some really good players out of the lineup right now, and you're playing with fire when that happens," Fehr said referring to injuries to Martin Erat and Brooks Laich. "It's not easy to win games in this league at the best of times." Fehr hasn't earned a point his past 13 appearances, but he also just recently returned to the lineup from an upper-body injury.

After getting zero goals in his first nine games, Fehr now has seven points in 14 games on the season. Even though he's playing very well now, he shouldn't be considered in fantasy leagues.

"A lot of the problem was my health the last couple of years. I'm feeling a lot better now. With a healthy body and a fresh start, it's been great for me ... that should give me a good opportunity to find a place to play if the league comes back. Obviously I believed in myself more than a lot of people believed in me."
