Mike Richards quietly heats up for the Kings | 11/03/2013 9:43 AM
NewsAfter suffering from serious scoring issues to start 2013-14, Mike Richards is really revving up his production lately.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactRichards has scored in five of his last six games (three goals, three assists) to push his season points total to 11. One of his three tallies this season came shorthanded, and he's one of the rare players who are close to dependable in the mostly unreliable and random SHG category. With Jeff Carter and Jarret Stoll hurt, he's likely to get big minutes like he has the past few games (21+ minutes in three of the last four).
Mike Richards grabs goal for winning Kings | 10/28/2013 12:48 AM

Los Angeles Daily News
ImpactRichards is just 28, but he's already tied with Martin St. Louis for the career lead in shorthanded goals among active players. He's also in a tie for 24th place in the all-time list. NewsMike Richards registered an assist in the Kings' 2-1 shootout victory on Thursday.
ImpactRichards now has five points in eight games this season. He's also still searching for his first goal, but what's more concerning is that he has just 11 shots on goal so far this season. He's more of a playmaker than a goal scorer, but if he still should be counted on to find the back of the net 15-20 times if he starts firing the puck more.

NewsMike Richards felt more comfortable in his second season with the Los Angeles Kings.
Impact"Especially after you win a championship, and more so after the first couple months, you start feeling more comfortable and confident to say things in the dressing room," Richards said. "Maybe your first season you're a little bit tentative to step up in different ways, but I think this year with pretty much the same group as we had last year, I think everybody stepped up in different ways when things needed to be said." Richards signed a 12-year deal with the Philadelphia Flyers, but was traded to Los Angeles. He's under their control through 2019-20.

Kings' Mike Richards unlikely to play tonight | 06/08/2013 11:43 AM
NewsMike Richards, who has been sidelined for four consecutive games with concussion-like symptoms, is unlikely to join the Los Angeles Kings for Game 5 in the Western Conference final series against the Chicago Blackhawks tonight.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactFacing elimination and down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series to the Hawks, the Kings would love to have their leading offensive player in the lineup but LA coach Darryl Sutter said it was "really doubtful at best" that Richards would be in the lineup for Game 5. Richards has done some light skating - the team was not on the ice Friday - and attended the Kings' last two games, in the press box for the latter. His presence at Staples Center was a positive development because often individuals suffering from severe concussion symptoms are sensitive to lights and noise and are advised to steer clear of those situations.
Kings' Mike Richards won't play in Game 4 | 06/06/2013 2:01 PM
NewsMike Richards (upper body) has been ruled out for Game 4.

Mike Richards skates, return remains unclear | 06/05/2013 4:42 PM
NewsMike Richards (upper body) skated for about 20 minutes on Wednesday.
ImpactThis is a positive step after it was reported that he had been suffering from concussion-like symptoms. However, he did not take any contact in the optional session and he skated with a light-to-moderate pace. There's still no timetable for his return and he should probably be considered questionable for Game 4 on Thursday night.
Mike Richards won't play in Tuesday's Game 3 | 06/04/2013 1:59 PM
NewsMike Richards (upper body) will not play in Tuesday's Game 3.
Pierre LeBrun on Twitter
ImpactThis isn't much of a surprise for anyone. Richards wasn't at Tuesday's morning skate and reportedly is dealing with concussion-like symptoms following a hit by Dave Bolland in Game 1. While we are unlikely to get any sort of official confirmation, the concussion speculation will grow the longer Richards is out.
Richards reportedly has concussion symptoms | 06/03/2013 6:35 PM
NewsMike Richards reportedly has concussion-like symptoms.
ImpactRichards missed Game 2 with what was labeled as an upper-body injury. It's likely that he was hurt when he was hit by Dave Bolland late in Game 1. Richards was initially projected to play on Sunday despite the hit. "He was fine all day, but I think once he got to the United Center last night, he starts thinking about being a warrior and then the blood starts pumping and then he starts going through his routine and then you go through your meeting and you go out for warm-up, and then he knows himself," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. Sutter wouldn't speculate on the possibility of Richards playing on Tuesday, but if he really is dealing with a concussion, then we'd doubt he'll be in Game 3.
Mike Richards scratched in Game 2 with UBI | 06/03/2013 8:44 AM
NewsMike Richards did not play in Sunday's Game 2 with what's being called an upper-body injury.
ImpactMuch like he did before the game, Darryl Sutter said Richards is "fine" but noted he won't play unless he's 100 percent. "He was fine today, then I think just once his blood got pumping tonight, the adrenaline got going, there were symptoms," Sutter said." The use of the word "symptoms" and the 100 percent requirement screams concussion or head-related injury, especially considering he was hurt on a high hit from Dave Bolland at the end of Game 1. We'll have to see how Richards feels before Tuesday's Game 3.
Darryl Sutter says Mike Richards is 'fine' | 06/02/2013 5:17 PM

Mike Richards might be injured | 06/01/2013 9:24 PM
NewsMike Richards might have been hurt at the end of Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.
Helene Elliott on Twitter
ImpactRichards absorbed what might have been a high-hit from Dave Bolland near the end of the third period. He declined to talk to reporters after the game and naturally teams aren't particularly forthcoming with injury information in the playoffs. For now we'll list him as healthy, but that could change, especially given that Game 2 will take place on Sunday.
Mike Richards laments Kings loss in San Jose | 05/27/2013 9:48 AM
NewsKings star Mike Richards was concise in his analysis of the San Jose Sharks series-tying, 2-1 win over Los Angeles Sunday night.
Los Angeles Times
Impact"I didn't think we played well, to be honest," Richards said. ". . . Everything seemed like it was to the outside and we couldn't generate anything. We have to find a way to do that and obviously on Tuesday night, hopefully." Game 7 goes Tuesday night in Los Angeles. The home team has won every game in this series.

Offensive woes continue for Kings | 05/22/2013 1:15 AM
NewsMike Richards provided the only offense for the Los Angeles Kings with a third period power play goal in their 2-1 Game 4 loss to San Jose on Tuesday.
ImpactThe Kings offense sputtered in San Jose, after starting the series strong. The team was completely outplayed in the first period, resulting in a 15-3 shot differential in favor of the Sharks. L.A. turned it around a bit in the third, mustering some quality chances in the form of 14 shots, including Richards' tally. However, the team needs to solve their offensive dilemmas as they head home for Game 5 on Thursday. Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar both recorded assists in the loss and led the team with four shots apiece.
Richards line has been leading the Kings | 05/20/2013 8:50 AM
NewsThe Los Angeles Kings have been getting a lot more production from their second line of Mike Richards and Jeff Carter and whoever Darryl Sutter likes at the moment over their top line of Anze Kopitar, Justin Williams and Dustin Brown.
Impact"Well, Richards' line has produced more in the playoffs than Kopi's line, so it's who you like most is your top line. I don't think you can get by with a "top line" - one top line," Sutter said. "I think we're playing against a team with two top lines, and we need our two top lines, without having our top checking centerman, we need those two lines to be very productive, and I think if I look at the series, just thinking about it, I think we've scored four even strength goals, and I think Richards' line has scored three and Lewie and Tyler's scored one last night. So that's four in the series." The Kings need the Kopitar line to start scoring if they hope to advance.

Two assists for Mike Richards in Kings' win | 05/07/2013 12:55 AM
NewsCenter Mike Richards picked up two assists in the Los Angeles Kings' 4-3 triumph over the visiting St. Louis Blues in first-round playoff action Monday night.
ImpactThe victory allowed the Kings to tie their best-of-seven series with St. Louis at 2-2. For Richards, the assists were his second and third of the playoffs. Richards assisted on goals by Justin Williams, his second of the series, and Jeff Carter, his first. Also scoring for the Kings were Anze Kopitar (first) and Dustin Penner (first). The Kings had trouble scoring in the earlier games of the series but their gunners came alive Monday. The Blues took a 2-0 lead in the first period before Carter and Penner tied the game at 2-2. The Blues went ahead 3-2 in the second period on T.J. Oshie's second goal of the night. Then Kopitar tied the game and Kopitar stuffed in the game winner at 8:30 of the third period.
Mike Richards sees faceoff flaws for Kings | 05/04/2013 11:49 AM
NewsThe Los Angeles Kings have won only 40.2% of the draws so far in their playoff series against the St. Louis Blues, and that's well below their regular-season success rate of 52%.
Los Angeles Times
Impact"That's where it starts, with puck possession," center Mike Richards said, "and when we have that puck possession I think we're a better hockey team. And hopefully [Saturday] night we can start with the faceoffs and go from there."

NewsMike Richards extended his point streak to six games with a goal on Saturday.
Los Angeles Times
Impact"I think he has gotten stronger for sure," Kings Coach Darryl Sutter said. "And as is typical with Mike, that is the bigger it gets, the better he plays. I think it's on record that he had a tough start and he's certainly played well lately. We need those centermen to complement each other, that was one of the real strengths of our team last year." Richards has three goals and seven points during his six-game hot streak.
Mike Richards has two point night in 3-2 win | 04/12/2013 3:59 AM
NewsMike Richards scored his 10th goal of the season and added an assist in the LA Kings 3-2 shootout win over the Colorado Avalanche.
ImpactRichards has suffered from consistency issues this season, taking eight games to score his first goal and then having a 10 game stretch in March where he only had three points. But in his last seven games he has seven points and has looked a little bit more like the player the Kings thought they were getting when they gave up Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmons for the ex-Flyers captain. He plays in all situations so keep riding him while he's hot.

Mike Richards continues strong season | 03/08/2013 10:46 AM
NewsMike Richards has been averaging roughly a point per game since his early season slump.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactRichards has 17 points in 18 contests after being held off the scoresheet in the Kings' first 22 games. He struggled offensively during his first season with the Kings, but did far better in the 2012 playoffs. It's probably best to just ignore his 44-point 2011-12 campaign and regard him as a player that will typically average a step below a point-per-game.
Mike Richards stays hot with two goals | 02/17/2013 7:46 PM
NewsEven as the Los Angeles Kings struggle, Mike Richards is really picking up his game.
ImpactRichards had both of the Kings' goals (each on the power play) as Los Angeles fell 3-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks. Four of his nine points this season have come in the last games. His 30 PIM made him reasonably valuable even when the offense wasn't coming, but perhaps this production is a sign of a strong season ahead.
Conditioning could be problem for M.Richards | 02/17/2013 10:35 AM
NewsCoach Darry Sutter hinted at the fact Mike Richards' conditioning could be an issue Saturday.
ImpactWhen asked why Richards, who has received less than 16 minutes of ice time in each of the last three games, has had his role reduced lately, Sutter said "We're trying to watch ice time with these guys. Some of these guys, quite honest, didn't do what they should've done in the summer. We've had to scale minutes back, and less is more." This might explain the lack of production for Richards thus far, but doesn't exactly make us hopeful about his ability to rebound.
