ImpactRanger played in his first NHL game in nearly three years on Oct. 1 and went on to record 14 points and 36 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's only 29 (30 in September), so we wouldn't dismiss the possibility of him making yet another NHL comeback down the road.

ImpactThere was some talk that he might play Friday night against the Flyers but he did not dress in the Maple Leafs' 4-2 loss. He is still a possibility for Saturday's contest against Detroit but we wouldn't fret about it. Even at his best, Ranger is not a fantasy asset.

ImpactHe scored on a 2-on-1 tap in on a nice play by Phil Kessel. "I just had to bust my butt up there," Ranger said. "I go to the net and I just put my stick on the ice. Hits my stick, bounces in. Great pass." He has two goals and one assist in five appearances following the Olympic break.

ImpactHe scored a shorthanded marker into an empty net to give the Leafs a two-goal lead late in the contest. Ranger had four shots and a plus-1 rating. He's starting to round into form now after starting out on rocky ground. He has four points in 14 outings and has averaged 19:41 of ice time per match.

ImpactRanger made his way towards Buffalo goaltender Jhonas Enroth before using the front of his skate to kick the puck forward. Ranger wanted to try what he called a "fun shot," but Enroth didn't seem to appreciate it. "I didn't really like it," said Enroth. "I felt like he was trying to embarrass me there. But it's good to see the guys trying to be creative, too. When I think about it now, it's fine." For his part, Ranger said that he wasn't trying to showboat. Either way, the shootout went on until Jay McClement finally scored in the 15th round.

NewsPaul Ranger has inked a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
ImpactThe exact financial terms of the contract haven't been revealed, but it's believed that he'll make in the ballpark of $1 million in 2013-14. Ranger started his NHL comeback last season by joining the AHL Marlies. He ended up with 25 points and 54 penalty minutes in 51 AHL games. The Maple Leafs now have six defensemen signed to one-way contracts, not including Jake Gardiner. They also still have two noteworthy blueliners that are still restricted free agents in Cody Franson and Mark Fraser.

Although it isn't official yet, it's expected that the Oilers will name Eakins as Edmonton's head coach Monday afternoon.
