ImpactRanger played in his first NHL game in nearly three years on Oct. 1 and went on to record 14 points and 36 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's only 29 (30 in September), so we wouldn't dismiss the possibility of him making yet another NHL comeback down the road.

ImpactThere was some talk that he might play Friday night against the Flyers but he did not dress in the Maple Leafs' 4-2 loss. He is still a possibility for Saturday's contest against Detroit but we wouldn't fret about it. Even at his best, Ranger is not a fantasy asset.

Impact"I'm not sure yet," Ranger said. "I feel pretty good but I have to talk to the trainers and the doctors and see if they clear me to play. (It will be) a combined decision (on Friday). If I can help in any way I am going to, and I plan on it." The Leafs have dressed seven defensemen several times before this season, so that could be an option if Ranger is ready to return.

ImpactThe Leafs didn't divulge the extent of his injury, but it's believed that he visited with the teams' doctors after being released from the hospital. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher Wednesday.

ImpactThe Maple Leafs released a statement which read: "Paul Ranger was taken to local hospital for precautionary assessment this evening during tonight's game. He is stable, conscious and alert." Killorn was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.

ImpactHe scored on a 2-on-1 tap in on a nice play by Phil Kessel. "I just had to bust my butt up there," Ranger said. "I go to the net and I just put my stick on the ice. Hits my stick, bounces in. Great pass." He has two goals and one assist in five appearances following the Olympic break.

ImpactHe scored a shorthanded marker into an empty net to give the Leafs a two-goal lead late in the contest. Ranger had four shots and a plus-1 rating. He's starting to round into form now after starting out on rocky ground. He has four points in 14 outings and has averaged 19:41 of ice time per match.

NewsPaul Ranger attracted some attention over his odd shootout attempt during Saturday's preseason game.
ImpactRanger made his way towards Buffalo goaltender Jhonas Enroth before using the front of his skate to kick the puck forward. Ranger wanted to try what he called a "fun shot," but Enroth didn't seem to appreciate it. "I didn't really like it," said Enroth. "I felt like he was trying to embarrass me there. But it's good to see the guys trying to be creative, too. When I think about it now, it's fine." For his part, Ranger said that he wasn't trying to showboat. Either way, the shootout went on until Jay McClement finally scored in the 15th round.

NewsPaul Ranger has inked a one-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
ImpactThe exact financial terms of the contract haven't been revealed, but it's believed that he'll make in the ballpark of $1 million in 2013-14. Ranger started his NHL comeback last season by joining the AHL Marlies. He ended up with 25 points and 54 penalty minutes in 51 AHL games. The Maple Leafs now have six defensemen signed to one-way contracts, not including Jake Gardiner. They also still have two noteworthy blueliners that are still restricted free agents in Cody Franson and Mark Fraser.

ImpactRanger might want to follow coach Dallas Eakins from the AHL Toronto Marlies to the Oilers. Although it isn't official yet, it's expected that the Oilers will name Eakins as Edmonton's head coach Monday afternoon. Ranger attempted a comeback in 2012-13 and ended up with 25 points and 54 penalty minutes in 51 AHL contests.
