Curtis McElhinney getting a big opportunity | 12/04/2013 5:25 PM
NewsWith Sergei Bobrovsky (groin) sidelined for four-to-five weeks, Curtis McElhinney is the de facto starter for the Blue Jackets.
ImpactMcElhinney has a 2.34 GAA and .925 save percentage in eight games. He was also great in the AHL last season, but he's also never logged more than 28 NHL contests in a single campaign. If nothing else, Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen is throwing his support behind McElhinney. "It's going to be more than a regular schedule for Curtis, but he's ready for it," Kekalainen said. "If you look around the league, this has happened to Jonathan Quick and Pekka Rinne, and it's worked out for those teams and I'm confident it will work out for us, too."

ImpactMcElhinney has a 1.97 GAA and .931 save percentage in four games this season. Although Sergei Bobrovsky has struggled somewhat in 2013-14, McElhinney still shouldn't be regarded as a serious threat to wrestle away the starting gig or even start splitting time evenly with Bobrovsky.

NewsThe Ottawa Senators topped Curtis McElhinney and the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Tuesday.

NewsCurtis McElhinney (groin) returned to practice Saturday.
ImpactMcElhinney will be on the bench Friday for the opener as last year's Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky has the net for the Blue Jackets. McElhinney is worth taking only in the deepest of pools and only if he is a handcuff for Bobrovsky as Bobrovsky should see action in 60-70 games this season.

NewsCurtis McElhinney (lower body) missed practice again on Sunday.
ImpactIt's starting to look like McElhinney will not be ready to back up Sergei Bobrovsky to begin the 2013-14 season next week. If he is unable to go, then Mike McKenna or Jeremy Smith will start the season with the Blue Jackets as Bobrovsky's backup. McElhinney will play 15-20 games this season. He should only be taken in very deep drafts and only as a handcuff to Bobrovsky at this time.
G Curtis McElhinney may be out for opener | 09/21/2013 11:23 AM
NewsCurtis McElhinney, coming off a fine season at AHL Springfield, was slated to be Sergei Bobrovsky's backup goalie this season but that might not be the case come Oct. 4.
ImpactMcElhinney hasn't been practicing because of a lower-body injury and he very well might not be ready for the opener Oct. 4. That means Mike McKenna or Jeremy Smith, slated to split duties at Springfield, could back up Bobrovsky to start the season. Neither Smith nor McKenna has yet distanced himself from the other, Richards said. Smith, along with Bobrovsky, made the trip to Pittsburgh for an exhibition game today. Smith, 24, was 19-19-3 (2.77/.907) in 43 games for AHL Milwaukee last season. The second-round pick of Nashville in 2007 has played 128 AHL games and 43 ECHL games since turning pro in 2009. McKenna, 30, was 19-18-1 (2.42/.923) in 39 games for AHL Peoria last season. The sixth-round pick of Nashville in 2002 is in his ninth pro season and has played 17 NHL games. He was 4-8-1 (3.56/.887) in 15 games for Tampa Bay in 2008-09.

McElhinney used to playing with Vezina winner | 09/17/2013 9:46 AM
NewsCurtis McElhinney has plenty of experience playing behind a Vezina Trophy winning goaltender.
ImpactMcElhinney served as Miikka Kiprusoff's understudy for three campaigns in Calgary. He never ended up participating in more than 14 games in any of those seasons. "They'd always say I was going to play 15 to 25 games," McElhinney said. "But then Kipper would get hot, we'd be in the divisional race and it would be, 'We can't play you now; we've got to make the playoffs.'" McElhinney can serve as a decent backup goaltender, but he can't be counted on to carry the Blue Jackets if Sergei Bobrovsky falters.

NewsCurtis McElhinney could be recalled by the Columbus Blue Jackets if they are unable to deal for another goalie.
Aaron Portzline on Twitter
ImpactThe Blue Jackets earlier dealt Steve Mason to the Flyers so there will be no one to back up Sergei Bobrovsky if another goalie is not dealt to Columbus. McElhinney will see a lot of bench time in Columbus as Bobrovsky is definitely the number one goalie in the Ohio capital.

Curtis McElhinney injures groin in AHL | 01/12/2013 3:27 PM
NewsDepth goalie Curtis McElhinney reportedly suffered a groin pull in an AHL game on Saturday morning.
ImpactMcElhinney has been playing very well at a lower level lately, likely staying on the Columbus Blue Jackets' radar even if he'd need someone else's injury to get a great shot. Paul Dainton is expected to pick up his reps with the Springfield Falcons.
