NewsWhitney announced his retirement from professional hockey over the weekend, Yahoo!'s Greg Wyshynski reports.
The Philadelphia Flyers are interested in Ryan Whitney according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. | 10/25/2014 12:26 PM
NewsThe Philadelphia Flyers are interested in Ryan Whitney according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
ImpactThe St. Louis Blues released Whitney in training camp, so he signed with a Russian team in the KHL. Philadelphia lost two defensemen this week, so they are in dire need of some bodies. They will have to act quickly before Whitney plays a game in Russian, or he will have to go through waivers to return to the NHL.
Panthers return Ryan Whitney to the AHL | 03/26/2014 2:37 PM
NewsThe Florida Panthers have sent Ryan Whitney to the minors.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactWhitney has no points in seven games with Florida this season. There was a time when he was one of the better offensive defenseman in the NHL, but we think his days of being relevant in standard fantasy leagues are over.
Panthers recall Ryan Whitney from the AHL | 03/23/2014 6:58 PM
NewsThe Florida Panthers recalled defenseman Ryan Whitney from the AHL's San Antonio Rampage for Sunday's game against the Anaheim Ducks.
George Richards on Twitter
ImpactHe's been largely ineffective in the NHL so far, going without a point in six NHL games this year (also a -7 rating). This might be his last chance to prove he can belong with the league, although it may be too late. Ed Jovanovski could be out of the lineup.
Panthers load Ryan Whitney to AHL | 11/12/2013 7:18 AM
NewsRyan Whitney has been loaned to AHL San Antonio.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactHe cleared waivers on Saturday and hasn't played much for the Panthers this year.

Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactHe cleared waivers on Saturday and has appeared in six games with the Panthers this campaign.
Florida waives Ryan Whitney | 11/08/2013 12:28 PM
NewsRyan Whitney has been placed on waivers by the Florida Panthers.
Bob McKenzie on Twitter
ImpactThe Florida Panthers fired head coach Kevin Dineen Friday morning and waiving Whitney is probably the first of many player moves the struggling team engages in. Whitney had no points in six games with the Panthers. We wouldn't be shocked if he got claimed, but we certainly wouldn't bet on it either.
Ryan Whitney played against Oilers on Tuesday | 11/06/2013 7:36 AM
NewsRyan Whitney dressed Tuesday against his former Edmonton teammates.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactHe has played in just six games with the Panthers this season and has sat often as a healthy scratch. "Whit came out of St. Louis and didn't find himself in the lineup here for two or three weeks," coach Kevin Dineen said. "He worked his way back into it last game and I thought he gave us a pretty solid effort. He's a valuable option." He has no points and a minus-7 rating this year.
Ryan Whitney is a healthy scratch once more | 10/13/2013 3:05 PM
NewsMuch like Friday, the Florida Panthers decided to make Ryan Whitney a healthy scratch against the Los Angeles Kings.
George Richards on Twitter
ImpactThe Kings are familiar with Whitney from his days with the Anaheim Ducks. His -5 rating shouldn't be that surprising, but failing to score a single point in four games is a little surprising. He's generated four PIM and eight SOG for Florida.
Ryan Whitney a healthy scratch | 10/12/2013 10:50 AM
NewsRyan Whitney was a healthy scratch Friday night.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactHe did not play in the Panthers' 6-3 rout of the Penguins Friday night. Matt Gilroy took his place in the lineup. Given how well the Cats played, don't be surprised if the Whintey sits out Sunday's game against the Kings as well.
Whitney gets in first practice with Panthers | 10/01/2013 5:42 PM
NewsRyan Whitney had his first practiced with the Panthers on Tuesday.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel
ImpactWhitney wasn't able to secure a contract over the summer and didn't make the St. Louis Blues after participating in their training camp on a tryout basis. Still, he has a lot of offensive upside, so the Panthers decided to take a chance on him at the cost of a one-year/$900k contract. He's worth keeping a close eye on.
Ryan Whitney signed by Florida Panthers | 09/30/2013 12:44 AM
NewsThe Florida Panthers have signed Ryan Whitney to a one-year contract worth $900,000.
ImpactWhitney, a 30-year-old defenseman, was signed as a free agent. Whitney was released from his tryout with the St. Louis Blues on Friday. He spent the past three-and-a-half seasons with the Edmonton Oilers and had four goals and nine assists in 34 games last season. In 474 games with Edmonton, Anaheim and Pittsburgh, the Boston native has 50 goals, 209 assists and 377 penalty minutes. Whitney was the Penguins' first-round pick (No. 5) at the 2002 NHL Draft. "Very excited and honored to sign with (Panthers)," Whitney tweeted. "Can't wait for season to start." The Panthers launch their regular season on Thursday against Dallas.
Blues decide to pass on Ryan Whitney | 09/27/2013 2:00 PM
NewsRyan Whitney has been released from his professional tryout offer.
Lou Korac on Twitter
ImpactWhitney's stock has obviously fallen hard over the last few seasons, but he still has the potential to be a solid offensive defensemen. The problem is that the Blues have one of the best defenses in the league, so Whitney cracking it was an uphill battle.
Ryan Whitney still in Blues plans | 09/14/2013 10:53 AM
NewsRyan Whitney is still in the Blues plans even with the signing of Alex Pietrangelo.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Impact"When I talked to (GM) Doug (Armstrong) when he invited me, he said this isn't just because Pietrangelo hasn't been signed," Whitney said. "He was by no means saying I was going to make the team, but he was also saying that they know even when he's here, they're going to need a lot of defensemen." Whitney was selected fifth overall in the 2002 draft by Pittsburgh and struggled last season with the Oilers as the offensive defenseman had only four goals and 13 points in 34 games. Look for Whitney to turn it around if he sticks with the Blues as a 10-12 goal, 40 point season is not out of the question.
Ryan Whitney gets invite to Blues camp | 09/07/2013 8:04 PM
NewsRyan Whitney has been invited to the Blues' training camp.
ImpactThe 30-year-old rearguard played 34 games with the Oilers last year, notching four goals and nine assists. NHL.com's Louie Korac notes that this is clearly an insurance move for the Blues in case Alex Pietrangelo, a restricted free agent, is not signed to start the year.
Ryan Whitney may go unsigned until camps open | 08/13/2013 10:37 AM
NewsJim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal speculates that Ryan Whitney may have to wait until training camps open to sign on somewhere.
Impact"I still think Whitney makes a heckuva first pass out of his zone," Matheson said. "I think he can be a second unit power-play guy. Teams are always looking for defensemen. He'll get work. When? Who knows." He also believes that Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida or the New York Islanders could be teams interested in Whitney.
Agent: Ryan Whitney looking for the right fit | 08/02/2013 9:35 AM
NewsRyan Whitney's agent, Paul Krepelka, told the Edmonton Journal via text that his client is still "waiting/looking for the right fit."
ImpactWhitney became a free agent in this summer after two poor seasons in Edmonton. The 30-year-old defenseman made $5.5 million last season but is likely looking at a far more limited deal at this point. "t's been a unique free-agency period," Krepelka said via text. "After initial signings on Day Oene, the secondary phase dried up very quickly. Would guess a lot of players will be waiting for find work up and including training camp."
Ryan Whitney's career in Edmonton over | 04/29/2013 9:08 AM
NewsRyan Whitney will become an unrestricted free agent in July.
ImpactWhitney will get a fresh start somewhere else as his final two seasons in Edmonton were not good ones. He had only four goals and 13 points this season after a 20 point season in 2011-12. At age 30, he still could turn things around in a new environment as he was a good scoring defenseman before his last two seasons.
Ryan Whitney (leg) out Wednesday | 04/24/2013 3:25 PM
NewsRyan Whitney will not suit up Wednesday because of a leg injury.
ImpactIt isn't clear if he'll be available to play in either of Edmonton's final two regular-season contests following Wednesday night's contest. Mark Fistric will draw back into the lineup in his place.
Ryan Whitney relieved he wasn't traded | 04/05/2013 10:08 AM
NewsRyan Whitney is relieved that he wasn't traded.
ImpactEarlier in this season, Whitney might have welcomed the change of scenery as the Oilers were barely playing him. What a difference a couple months can make. "It was great, it was just a good feeling," said Whitney said. "If I'd gone to another team, it probably would have been to team in the playoffs or competing for a spot. But to be able to do it here is a lot more special, because I've been here all year." It still wouldn't be surprising to see him sign elsewhere as an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Ryan Whitney gets two points Wednesday | 04/04/2013 9:57 AM
NewsRyan Whitney scored a goal and registered an assist on Wednesday.
ImpactWhitney shined just hours after the Oilers' decision not to trade him became official. He's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but for now he'll aide in the Oilers' battle for a playoff spot.
Oilers could still deal Ryan Whitney | 04/03/2013 10:16 AM
NewsThe Edmonton Oilers might still trade Ryan Whitney.
ImpactThere are still plenty of teams in the market for a defenseman and not many appealing ones that are still available. The Edmonton Oilers will likely be tempted to keep Whitney because they're still in the playoff race, but Oilers GM Steve Tambellini might end up with an offer he feels is too good to refuse.
Report: Bruins interested in Ryan Whitney | 03/28/2013 9:27 AM
NewsThe Boston Bruins might end up acquiring Ryan Whitney.
ImpactThere have reportedly been discussions, but nothing has been finalized. While such a trade would have made a ton of sense for Edmonton earlier this season, it's a touch more of a gray area now. The Oilers still have an outside shot of making the playoffs and Whitney has turned his season around. Still, Whitney will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and isn't likely to sign with the Oilers. Edmonton's top priority should still be building for tomorrow and the Bruins are likely eager to make a move after missing out on Jarome Iginla. With that in mind, Whitney heading to Boston wouldn't be surprising.
Ryan Whitney understands why fans booing | 03/24/2013 10:59 AM
NewsThe Edmonton Oilers were booed loudly by their hometown fans during their 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues Saturday and defenseman Ryan Whitney doesn't blame them.
Impact"No one wants to hear that, but we didn't play well," said Whitney. "They pay a lot of money to be here and expect more than what we gave them. You have to play better so you don't (hear the boos)."
Ryan Whitney looked good in return to lineup | 03/03/2013 11:09 AM
NewsRyan Whitney is receiving positive reviews after his return to the Oilers lineup on Friday.
ImpactEdmonton was on the wrong end of a 4-2 score against the Blues, but Whitney scored his first goal of the season and registered a plus-1 rating in just over 18 minutes of ice time. Coach Ralph Kreuger offered praise for Whitney, saying "You're happy when a guy comes back into the lineup and scores a goal. Good reaction to having been out of the lineup." It's possible the Oilers are still looking to move the offensive blueliner, but his fantasy owners should be happy to see he can be an asset in the mean time.
Ryan Whitney tries to stay positive | 02/28/2013 11:10 AM
NewsRyan Whitney is trying to stay positive despite spending six of Edmonton's last 10 games in the press box.
Impact"It's obviously really frustrating, but I've been doing my best to stay positive around the guys so I'm not a distraction or anything," said Whitney. "As frustrated as I am, I think I've done a good job of not bringing anyone down around me. Things could be a lot worse in my life. I don't necessary agree with not playing. I want to play. But I don't want to make it a sideshow. I've got really good friends on this team who I'm rooting for every night. As pissed off as I am, it's not about me." The ideal at this point would be Edmonton trading Whitney, but earlier reports suggest there isn't much of a market for him at this time.
Report: Teams aren't interested in Whitney | 02/27/2013 11:40 AM
NewsRyan Whitney apparently hasn't attracted much attention on the free agent market.
ImpactSportsnet analyst, as well as former NHL GM and coach, Doug MacLean said that offers for Whitney "are not coming." Whitney has spent six of Edmonton's last 10 games in the press box and his contract expires this summer. He was once among the NHL's top offensive defensemen, but it looks like he won't have any fantasy value in Edmonton.
Ryan Whitney a healthy scratch Monday | 02/26/2013 9:27 AM
NewsRyan Whitney was a healthy scratch on Monday.
ImpactIt was the sixth time in his last 10 games that Whitney was a healthy scratch as it seems his tenure in Edmonton may be over. There could be some teams out there still looking for an offensive forward and the Oilers could likely get a second or third round pick for his services. Theo Peckham also sat out the game on Monday and joined Whitney as a healthy scratch.
Ryan Whitney will be scratched Saturday | 02/23/2013 2:35 PM
NewsRyan Whitney will spend Saturday's game in the press box.
Aaron Ward on Twitter
ImpactThis will make it four out of the last six contests that Whitney's been listed as a healthy scratch. Unless he gets traded, it doesn't look like he'll have any fantasy value this season.
Oilers will scratch Ryan Whitney again | 02/21/2013 5:34 PM
NewsRyan Whitney will be a healthy scratch for the Oilers Thursday.
ImpactHe will watch his fourth game from the press box in the team's past eight now and Theo Peckham will take his spot in the lineup against the Minnesota Wild. Whitney will become an unrestricted free agent this summer, so it's likely that Edmonton will look to trade him before the season is over.
R. Whitney is back in Oilers' lineup Saturday | 02/16/2013 11:15 AM
NewsRyan Whitney will play on Saturday after spending two games in the press box.
Impact"I just want to play better. It's pretty simple," said Whitney. "I just want to stay in the lineup, so whatever I have to do to do that, it's what I want to do. It's been long enough for me. I'm looking forward to a fresh start." It wouldn't be surprising to see Whitney turn his season around.
Scratched Ryan Whitney vents frustrations | 02/13/2013 11:22 AM
NewsRyan Whitney vented after being named a healthy scratch on Tuesday, but he isn't requesting a trade.
ImpactIt was Whitney's second straight game in the press box. "I thought after the last game I'd be in the lineup, but I'm not," Whitney said. "I'm very frustrated. I want to play. We got outshot 40-14 and I'm not playing, so I think that shows where their thoughts are. I don't think (Krueger) cares who you are. He wants to win. Whatever he thinks is the best lineup is the one he's going to play." Whitney emphasized that he still likes it in Edmonton, even though "they're paying me a lot of money and I'm not playing." Edmonton lost on Tuesday, so Whitney might get a chance to leave coach Ralph Krueger's doghouse on Saturday.
Whitney, Smyth likely to be scratched Tuesday | 02/12/2013 2:22 PM
NewsRyan Whitney and Ryan Smyth are expected to be healthy scratches Tuesday.
Dan Tencer on Twitter
ImpactWhitney has been in coach Ralph Krueger's doghouse for much of this season, sabotaging whatever fantasy value he would have had. Smyth, meanwhile, has been struggling with penalties this season, particularly of late. Captain Canada has been called for six minors in the last four games and it appears Krueger has had enough. It's difficult to recommend either player until they find some sort of even footing.
Whitney hopes to return to lineup soon | 02/05/2013 4:10 PM
NewsRyan Whitney thinks he'll be back in the Oilers' lineup on Wednesday.
Oilers.nhl.com on Twitter
ImpactWhitney was made a healthy scratch on Monday. Obviously spending time in the coach's doghouse isn't a good sign, but Whitney should still have some fantasy value this season as long as he can stay healthy.
Ryan Whitney is a healthy scratch Monday | 02/04/2013 4:07 PM
NewsRyan Whitney will spend Monday's game in the press box.
Aaron Ward on Twitter
ImpactWhitney has three assists in seven games, but he was minus-two in the Oilers' contest against Colorado on Saturday. He'll probably end up back in the lineup in the near future.
Whitney has 3 assists in 7 games in 2013 | 02/02/2013 2:36 PM
NewsRyan Whitney has three assists in seven games this season.
ImpactThat's not bad production out of a blueliner and there's no reason to believe he'll slow down. If anything, he might start recording more points per game, given how much offensive talent is on the Oilers and the fact that Whitney is logging tons of time with the man advantage. The bigger question is if he can stay healthy. He's played in just 105 games over the last three seasons, so he's a high-risk, high-reward pick.
