ImpactKevan Miller, Gregory Campbell, and Chad Johnson joined Chara in feeling under the weather, so they were kept away from their healthy teammates on Monday. Look for them ti be available for Tuesday night's contest in Calgary. We'll let you know if we hear otherwise.
Bruins come back, Chara gets game-winner | 12/07/2013 11:46 PM
NewsZdeno Chara notched the game-winning goal for the Bruins in their 3-2 come-from-behind victory against the Penguins on Saturday night.
ImpactBoston scored two goals in 1:16 to defeat the Penguins. David Krejci had the first one of those at 18:31 of the period. Chara is 36 now, but he still is a very good hockey player. He has seven goals and 12 points this season. Reilly Smith scored and had an assist.
Zdeno Chara gets Gordie Howe hat trick Friday | 11/29/2013 3:47 PM
NewsZdeno Chara had a Gordie Howe hat trick in Boston's 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers.

Z. Chara finds the back of the net Saturday | 11/24/2013 8:55 AM
NewsZdeno Chara scored a goal in Boston's 3-2 overtime win on Saturday.
CSN New England
ImpactChara has four goals and eight points in 23 games this season. He should be able to pick up the pace as the season drags on. Either way though, Chara's value goes up in leagues that use hits and blocked shots as he has 56 and 31 respectively.

Zdeno Chara pots goal for Bruins in win | 10/05/2013 9:46 PM
NewsZdeno Chara notched a goal for the Bruins in their 4-1 win against the Red Wings on Saturday night.
ImpactThe grizzled veteran is coming off a down season in which he notched just 19 points in 48 games, but a lot of veterans had trouble adjusting to the lockout-shortened campaign, so let's write that off as a fluke. Chara might not post elite numbers, but he'll be plenty productive. Torey Krug notched a goal and an assist, whle Jordan Caron, Torey Krug and Brad Marshand had the other markers. Milan Lucic had two assists.
Zdeno Chara will provide PP versatility | 09/24/2013 6:33 AM
NewsZdeno Chara's power-play goals against Washington displayed versatility and how the Bruins should utilize his size and ability this year.
ImpactHe produced one goal from being positioned in front of the net and the other from the point during a 5-on-3 advantage. "No matter where it is, I love to compete and being in those areas," said Chara. "Wherever the coaching staff decides to use me, I'm fine with that. Right now, we're trying different looks on the power play and one of them is in front. And 5-on-3 I was back on the point." Coach Claude Julien plans to switch up where the big captain lines up on the power play over the course of the year. He provides an excellent screen and his blistering shot is a strong weapon as well.
Zdeno Chara scores pair in preseason win | 09/23/2013 10:03 PM
NewsZdeno Chara scored two goals for the Bruins in a 3-2 overtime win over Washington in Monday night's preseason action.
ImpactDespite the fact his career should be on the decline, the ageless wonder shows no signs of wearing down, Chris Kelly scored the overtime winner for the Bruins while Tuukka Rask blocked 12 of 14 shots for the win. Braden Holtby stopped 35 of 38 Boston shots in the losing effort while Washington received scoring contributions from Connor Carrick and Martin Erat.
Chara may have new PP assignment | 09/15/2013 8:19 AM
NewsDon't be surprised if Zdeno Chara receives plenty of opportunities to play in front of the opponent's net on the Bruins' power-play this upcoming season.
ImpactBoston did employ Chara in this fashion in season's past during 5-3 power plays. However, it seems with the emergence of Torey Krug, Dougie Hamilton and Johnny Boychuk, Bruins' coach Claude Julien believes he has the depth on the point to try Chara down low more often. "We're tinkering with that," coach Claude Julien said. "Obviously we're going to have another look. We've got some guys that we feel can shoot the puck from the back end and do some things. Z is probably one of our best guys screening in front of the net with his big body". If Chara does line up this way, he is likely to pick up a few more goals of the garbage variety on the power play.
Zdeno Chara had a hip flexor injury | 06/26/2013 12:55 PM
NewsZdeno Chara's ailment was a hip flexor injury.
Fluto Shinzawa on Twitter
ImpactThe Chicago Blackhawks appeared to wear down the Boston captain as the series progressed. Chara was on the ice for 10 of Chicago's 12 goals in the last three games of the Stanley Cup Finals en route to a minus-6 rating. Coach Claude Julien said that Chara was not playing at 100 percent after Game 6.
Claude Julien says Chara not at 100 percent | 06/24/2013 11:57 PM
NewsBoston Bruins coach Claude Julien said after Monday's Game 6 loss that Zdeno Chara was not 100 percent.
Fluto Shinzawa on Twitter
ImpactJulien wouldn't reveal Chara's issue, but this unknown ailment might help explain Chara's three straight sub-par efforts in Games 4-6. The hulking defenseman finished the Stanley Cup final with a minus-5 rating and was again culpable for a Chicago goal Monday night when he mistakenly pinched along the boards after a faceoff and took himself out of position. Chara remains arguably the NHL's best shutdown defender, but he definitely was not himself in Boston's three straight losses to close out the season.
Julien expects Chara to rebound on Monday | 06/24/2013 9:29 AM
NewsBoston coach Claude Julien is looking for Zdeno Chara to rebound defensively in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals Monday night.
Impact"It's pretty obvious that they're throwing the pucks in his corner and they want to get him to turn and tire him out," Julien said. "He's a well-trained athlete that can handle that, and you'll see that in the next game and hopefully the one after that." Chara has compiled a minus-5 rating and the Hawks have scored eight of their nine goals in the past two games of the Cup Final while he's been on the ice.
Zdeno Chara struggling defensively of late | 06/23/2013 8:12 AM
NewsBruins defensemen Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg have struggled defensively in the last two games against Chicago.
ImpactThe Bruins' top pairing has experienced all sorts of trouble trying to contain Chicago's newly-formed top trio of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Bryan Bickell and each of the blue liners sports a minus-5 rating of the team's last two games, both losses.
Zdeno Chara nets lone Bruins goal in loss | 06/22/2013 11:26 PM
NewsZdeno Chara scored a goal in a 3-1 defeat in Game 5.
ImpactDavid Krejci and Milan Lucic each recorded an assist on the Bruins' lone goal. Johnny Boychuk logged 24:51 minutes and was the only Boston player to finish with a plus/minsu rating above zero. Daniel Paille led the team with four shots on goal. Dennis Seidenberg was credited with a team-high four blocked shots.
Chara not intimidated by contact | 06/22/2013 9:45 AM
NewsThe fact that Zdeno Chara did not play well in Game 4 Wednesday night had nothing to do with the Blackhawks' strategy to by physical with the 6'7" defenseman according to the Bruins.
ImpactThe Hawks believe they threw Chara off his game by knocking him around in their 6-5 overtime win. Although he went minus three and was on the ice for five Chicago goals, the Bruins aren't buying what the Hawks are selling here. "Honestly, I don't know where they would get that scouting report from," Milan Lucic said on Friday. "He definitely doesn't mind the physical play at all. Once again, I don't know where they would get that scouting report from." It will be interesting to see if the Hawks go after Chara again in Game 5, and if they do, how the giant rearguard responds.
Chicago took it to Chara Wednesday night | 06/20/2013 6:16 AM
NewsIt wasn't a banner night for Zdeno Chara defensively in Wednesday's 6-5 overtime loss to Chicago.
ImpactThe Boston captain had been on the ice for just one opposition goal in his previous seven playoff games, but the Blackhawks put an end to that by racking up five markers against Chara in Game 4. He finished the contest with a minus-3 rating. Chara managed to collect two helpers in the defeat to somewhat salvage what could have been a disastrous night.
Julien says Zdeno Chara was cut over the eye | 06/18/2013 12:17 PM
NewsBoston Bruins coach Claude Julien says Zdeno Chara was cut over the eye in pregame warmups and not the back of the head as reported Monday night.
Joe Haggerty on Twitter
ImpactChara needed stitches after colliding with teammate Milan Lucic during warmups and there was brief concern he'd suffered a head injury during the pregame skate. The cut clearly didn't bother the Bruins' top defenseman as Chara again led Boston in minutes and again shut down Hawks star Jonathan Toews. Chara and the Bruins will look to take a commanding 3-1 series lead Wednesday night.
Chara needed stitches after pregame collision | 06/17/2013 10:54 PM
NewsZdeno Chara needed stitches after colliding with teammate Milan Lucic in pregame warmups, according to multiple media outlets.
James Murphy on Twitter
ImpactChara ended up hitting the ice after losing his edge. The hulking defenseman slid into the back of Lucic's legs and it appeared Lucic's skate may have made contact with Chara's head. It didn't bother him enough to keep him off the ice. Chara picked up an assist and while playing a team-high 25:47 and again teamed with Dennis Seidenberg to shut down Jonathan Toews. The Bruins now lead the series 2-1.
Chara, Seidenberg likely to draw Toews' line | 06/12/2013 12:48 PM
NewsBoston's shutdown pair of Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg is expected to play against Chicago's top line of Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Toews, and Marian Hossa.
ImpactIf that happens then Patrice Bergeron's line will probably draw the assignment of lining up against Patrick Kane's line.
Chara controlled Malkin | 06/08/2013 9:24 AM
NewsZdeno Chara was on the ice for 89% of Evgeni Malkin's even-strength shifts in the Bruins' 4-0 sweep of the Penguins in the Eastern Conference final.
Joe Haggerty Twitter
ImpactNo wonder Malkin had a rough go of it. The Penguin star did not record a point and was minus five for the series. If there was any doubt, it is now put to rest: Chara is the NHL's best shutdown defenseman.
Zdeno Chara doesn't give Penguins an inch | 06/06/2013 10:08 AM
NewsZdeno Chara led all players in ice time in Game 3 with 42:05 and he finished with a plus-2 rating.
ImpactThat news probably won't come as much of a shock, as the workhorse defenseman is matched up frequently against the opposition's best players. Chara played mostly against Evgeni Malkin in Game 3, but he did see playing time versus Sidney Crosy as well. Pittsburgh's dynamic duo still don't have a point in the series, which is why the Penguins find themselves in a 3-0 hole in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Bruins keep Chara, Seidenberg together | 06/01/2013 1:21 PM
NewsZdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg are projected to serve as Boston's top defensive pairing on Saturday.
CSN New England
ImpactThe Boston Bruins experimented with splitting them up during practices. The idea was that by splitting them up, at least one of them would always be facing one of the Penguins' top two lines. Given how strong the Pittsburgh Penguins' top-six forwards are, that strategy was certainly understandable. It wouldn't be surprising if they ended up separating Chara and Seidenberg later in the Eastern Conference finals.
Zdeno Chara leads league in playing time | 05/31/2013 9:18 AM
NewsZdeno Chara leads all active players with an average of 29:13 minutes per game.
ImpactThat's not likely to decline in the Eastern Conference finals. The Boston Bruins are tentatively planning to match him up against the line of Evgeni Malkin, Jarome Iginla, and James Neal, but he'll end up getting other assignments as well. Chara is one of the best defensemen in the league and the Bruins will continue to take full advantage of him.
Bruins may split Zdeno Chara and Seidenberg | 05/28/2013 6:40 AM
NewsZdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg may be split up against Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference Finals.
ImpactThe Penguins represent plenty of concern in terms of line matching because they boast considerable depth and having to face Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin can be tough to handle. Coach Claude Julien wasn't ready to tip his hand. "We've got a few days here before we can even think about playing that first game. So, we'll see how that goes," said Julien, who gave his players a second straight day off from skating Monday. "Maybe it's pairing, maybe it's separating. But we'll have something in mind by the time this first game comes around."
Zdeno Chara tops active players in TOI | 05/23/2013 2:17 AM
NewsWhile Ryan Suter's 31:37 minutes per game easily tops all players in this postseason, Zdeno Chara is averaging the most ice time among active participants.
ImpactChara is logging 29:23 minutes per game, comfortably ahead of Drew Doughty (28:06) and Kris Letang (27:17). With that in mind, the towering Boston Bruins captain would likely welcome the "rust" that may come from a second-round sweep.
Chara logging ridiculous ice time | 05/18/2013 9:36 AM
NewsZdeno Chara has been logging a ridiculous amount of ice time in the Bruins' eight playoff games to date.
ImpactHe has averaged 30:02 minutes per game, tops in the NHL and a full two minutes more than second place Drew Doughty of the Kings. In Boston's last two games, both first-period overtime victories, Chara has been on the ice for an astounding 73:48. Needless to say, the 6'7" rearguard is running on all cylinders now.
Zdeno Chara remains red hot in Round 2 | 05/17/2013 8:09 AM
NewsZdeno Chara has been a handful at both ends of the ice during Boston's 2012 playoffs.
ImpactHe continued his remarkable two-way play in the Bruins' 3-2 overtime win over the New York Rangers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Thursday. Chara racked up a game-high 38:02 of ice time, while dishing out nine shots, six hits and two points. The towering defender got his second goal of the postseason and he leads all defensemen in scoring with 10 points in eight games. The Bruins will continue to lean heavily on him even when their young blueliners, who are currently in the lineup, are replaced by the team's injured veterans.
Zdeno Chara a monster in Game 7 for Bruins | 05/14/2013 9:01 AM
NewsZdeno Chara was a monster in Game 7, logging 35:46 of ice time.
ImpactWith Seidenberg hurt, veterans Wade Redden and Andrew Ference out and two youngsters in the lineup, Chara and Johnny Boychuk (28:30) had to pick up the slack. "It was hard," said Chara. "We had a short bench right away. But that's when you have to be smart. Sometimes you do take longer shifts. Sometimes you take quick ones. But at that point, our thinking, I don't think was about thinking about the exhaustion. It was more about doing the right thing, the right play, being in the right position, and hopefully we scored before they do." Chara had a helper, a plus-two rating and three shots on goal in the win.
Zdeno Chara scores, but Bruins drop Game 5 | 05/10/2013 10:00 PM

Johnny Boychuk had three blocked shots, giving him 21 in five games. Milan Lucic recorded a team-high seven hits for the Bruins.
Zdeno Chara grabs four helpers Wednesday | 05/09/2013 10:18 AM
NewsZdeno Chara contributed an assist on all four of Boston's goals in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime win against Toronto.
ImpactThe towering defenseman had only one helper in the team's previous three playoff games versus the Maple Leafs. The game didn't begin well for Chara either after he was on the ice for Toronto's first two goals, but he finished strongly and ended up with an even plus-minus rating.
Chara and Seidenberg separated | 05/04/2013 10:25 AM
NewsBoston coach Claude Julien split up his top defensmen pairing during Friday's practise.
ImpactHe separated Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg. Chara was skating alongside Adam McQuaid, while Seidenberg paired with Johnny Boychuk. Wade Redden and Dougie Hamilton were the third pair. We are not sure if this is how the Bruins will lineup for Saturday's contest but we don't believe it will matter much. The defense corps should have no trouble containing the Maple Leafs' offense no matter how it is configured.
Boston GM expects more from Zdeno Chara | 04/30/2013 8:24 AM
NewsBoston GM Peter Chiarelli expects to see a better Zdeno Chara when the playoffs begin.
ImpactChiarelli didn't sound satisfied with the play of the Bruins captain when he spoke to the media on Monday. "For Z, he's obviously a very valuable player, one of the best, if not the best, defensemen in the league. Obviously you want him to be firing on all cylinders. So like the rest of them, he's got to get his game back," Chiarelli said. "With Z, it's about a strong defensive game, nothing fancy, big shots, a lot of straight lines. He is, obviously, important to the team, and what he does a lot of guys follow. He's got a lot of experience and we expect him to get his game where it has to be." Chara finished the regular season with two assists and a minus-3 rating in his last eight games. He'll be tasked with shutting down Toronto's Phil Kessel in the opening round of the playoffs and he's done a good job of that in regular-season play since Kessel was traded to the Leafs.
Zdeno Chara should be fine for Tuesday | 04/23/2013 7:13 AM
NewsZdeno Chara didn't practice Monday after a collision he had against Florida on Sunday.
ImpactCoach Claude Julien said the Boston captain suffered no ill effects, so we expect him to play Tuesday night.
Chara scores but Bruins can't hold off Pens | 03/12/2013 10:24 PM

ImpactChara and Tyler Seguin gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead after the first period, but the Penguins stormed back in the third with three unanswered markers to earn the victory. Chara has 11 points and a plus-11 rating in 24 contests.
Julien supports Chara for defending Seguin | 03/05/2013 8:35 AM
NewsCoach Claude Julien came to Zdeno Chara's defense for his actions in Sunday's loss to Montreal when he took 17 minutes penalties to defend teammate Tyler Seguin.
Impact"What Zdeno Chara did yesterday, I support 100 percent," said Julien Monday. "Besides that 17 minutes of penalties he got, what he did is going to go a long way for our hockey club. Especially for Tyler Seguin. Tyler's a good player. He needs to know everybody's got his back. Zdeno showed that yesterday. That will allow Tyler to become a better player. When you know people have your back, you can play at ease. That thing that Zdeno did is certainly going to help Tyler be comfortable." He added that the team was more responsible for their third-period collapse than it was about not having Chara for most of the frame.
Zdeno Chara penalties hurt Boston on Sunday | 03/04/2013 10:55 AM
NewsThe Bruins ended up paying for Zdeno Chara's attempt to stand up for teammate Tyler Seguin in Sunday's loss to Montreal.
ImpactBoston held a 3-2 lead late in the second period when Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin chopped at Seguin and sent him to the ice without a penalty. Chara went after Emelin as a result of the play and earned himself two for instigating, five for fighting, and a 10-minute misconduct. NewsZdeno Chara arrived in Boston from the Czech Republic on Wednesday.
ImpactHe is hoping that Boston can get off to a strong start since they had so many player go overseas to play during the lockout. "We were one of the teams that had most guys involved and playing, 12 guys overseas and some others guys in the minors," Chara said. "That's a pretty good number, considering that some teams maybe didn't have half of that. If it's going to be an advantage or not, we'll see. Hopefully it is." The Bruins captain played in 25 games with Lev Praha of the KHL, where he posted 10 points, 24 penalty minutes and a plus-5 rating while averaging 24:44 of ice time. He can contribute in several categories and should be high on everyone's draft board.
