NewsThere is good news for the Vancouver Canucks as veteran defenseman Kevin Bieksa is back practicing with the team.
ImpactBieksa is believed to have suffered a right-foot fracture some time last month and he hasn't played since Jan. 29. "I am not going to talk about it too much, but it was a puck obviously," Bieksa said of his injury. "It's not hard to figure that one out." He is still wearing a walking boot on his right foot, but Bieksa also hopes to be ready for Wednesday's game against St. Louis.

ImpactThe award is given to the NHL player for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Bieksa organized a charity game during the lockout that raised $200,000 and has volunteered for mindcheck.ca, a mental health website dedicated to his buddy Rick Rypien who had serious mental health issues that led to suicide in 2011. "I don't think you do stuff like that for the acknowledgment or credit or notoriety," Bieksa said. "It's just the way I was raised. The way this team is shaped, we do a lot of community work, I think, more so than a lot of other teams around the league. We take a lot of pride in it and we enjoy doing it. NHL season or not, we still felt like we wanted to contribute and do what we could to help. And that's what we did."
