|Assets:||Has good size and excellent fundamentals for the goaltending position. Displays an exemplary work ethic, especially at lower levels (where he dominates). Is a true battler in the crease area.|
|Flaws:||Tends to get beaten when forced to move quickly from side to side. Durability remains an issue with him. Is also inconsistent at the National Hockey League level, despite plenty of chances.|
|Career Potential:||Veteran depth goaltender.|

Michael Leighton inks contract with Donbass | 08/19/2013 2:36 PM
NewsMichael Leighton has agreed to a one-year deal with Donbass Donetsk of the KHL.
ImpactColumbus acquired him, along with a third-round pick, from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for goaltender Steve Mason in April. There wasn't any room for him on the Blue Jackets with Sergei Bobrovsky and Curtis McElhinney on the roster, but Donbass created a spot for him by releasing Chris Holt.
Richards not worried about Leighton | 04/25/2013 10:06 AM
NewsBlue Jackets coach Todd Richards isn't worried about Michael Leighton getting rusty.
ImpactLeighton has played in just one NHL game this season and it sounds like the only way he'll play is if Sergei Bobrovsky suffers an injury. "He's played in some big games in his career and proved that he can be a good goaltender at this level," Richards said. ". If something happens and he has to go in, he's keeping himself ready."

Could Michael Leighton get start Sunday? | 03/09/2013 8:04 PM
NewsMichael Leighton has been recalled by the Flyers.
Philadelphia Daily News
ImpactIt's a bit of an odd move for the Flyers, who have more pressing needs than their back-up goalie, as Brian Boucher will be sent back to the AHL. Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily news wonders if coach Peter Laviolette would be bold enough to start Boucher against the Sabres on Friday. A loss could put them in 14th place in the East. The 31-year-old was coming off an injury to his finger and has a 1-1-0 record with a 2.02 goals-against average and .933 save percentage on the AHL season. In his only start in the NHL this year, he gave up five goals on 26 shots.

Michael Leighton sidelined for 7-10 days | 02/10/2013 3:21 PM
NewsThe Philadelphia Flyers placed netminder Michael Leighton on the injured reserve on Sunday.
ImpactThe journeyman netminder is expected to miss 7-10 days with an upper-body injury. It isn't a major loss for a Philadelphia team that leans heavily on Ilya Bryzgalov; they'll turn to experienced backup Brian Boucher in Leighton's absence.

Michael Leighton suffer shaky start | 01/27/2013 10:34 PM
NewsMichael Leighton allowed five goals on 26 shots in a 5-1 loss to the Lightning Sunday.
ImpactThis wasn't how Leighton envisioned his first start of the campaign, certainly. For all the criticism Ilya Bryzgalov has taken, he has yet to perform this poorly. In fairness to Leighton, the Flyers defense corps has been ravaged by injury so he's not entirely to blame for the result.
Michael Leighton gets first start since 2011 | 01/27/2013 5:05 PM
NewsMichael Leighton will finally start again for the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

ImpactHe last saw the ice during the 2011 series in the Buffalo Sabres series, struggling mightily. His last regular season game was on Dec. 30, 2010, allowing four goals in a win against the Los Angeles Kings. He's unlikely to see many starts with Ilya Bryzgalov grabbing most - but apparently not all - of the team's back-to-back starts.
