ImpactConnolly successfully cleared waivers. In the new CBA, teams can't dodge a players full cap hit by sending them to the minors, so it's safe to say that the Leafs simply didn't feel there was a spot for him on their 23-player roster. The Maple Leafs haven't ruled out the possibility of calling him up at a later date.

ImpactThe question now is if the Leafs will attempt to trade him with the knowledge that they'd almost certainly need to retain part of his cap hit in the process. The Leafs might also simply buyout the remainder of his contract.

ImpactWe'll know for certain at 12:00 pm ET, but for now, it seems probable that he'll be part of the Islanders' in the near future. Connolly might have some fantasy value if they give him a shot on one of their top two lines, but we can't recommend picking him up at this time.

ImpactThis move was anticipated when Connolly didn't participate in Thursday's practice. Toronto might attend to trade him if he clears and retain part of his salary in the process. However, they also have the option of using one of their compliance buyouts on him.
