Shawn Horcoff's future a big story for Oilers | 05/14/2013 9:55 AM
NewsJim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal speculates it's only 50-50 the Oilers will buy out captain Shawn Horcoff this summer.
ImpactHorcoff, who will be 35 before next season starts, is due to count $5.5 million against the cap the next two seasons and is coming off a 12-point, 31-game season. Young players like Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle appear ready to take over the team's leadership mantle and it's hard to see Horcoff having a big enough role next year to justify that pay day. If Horcoff does end up as a free agent, we imagine he'd have a decent group of teams interested in adding him at a reduced cost.

"I can't put a lot of pressure on it yet, but it's getting there," Horcoff said. "The good news is that when it's ready, I'll be ready to go (after skating and practicing for so long)." Consider him day-to-day for now but he will require an x-ray to determine his progress before he is able to return.

Impact"We haven't proven anything yet," said Oilers captain Shawn Horcoff. "A bunch of first overall picks, if you look back in history, that doesn't guarantee success. For every Pittsburgh and Chicago there's a Columbus and Florida. It doesn't guarantee anything." The Oilers look good offensively thus far but are lacking on the defensive side of things.
