Anaheim signs Jason LaBarbera | 07/01/2014 6:47 PM
NewsJason LaBarbera has agreed to a one-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks.
ImpactRight now it looks like Frederik Andersen and John Gibson will start the season as the Ducks' goaltenders, but LaBarbera might be able to earn a spot out of training camp. Of course, we wouldn't rule out the possibility of Anaheim getting a more established NHL goaltender before the summer's over.

NewsJason LaBarbera allowed five goals on 27 shots in a 5-4 loss to Phoenix in a matinee contest Saturday.
ImpactDevan Dubnyk briefly entered the game in the second period, but LaBarbera went back into the crease after Dubynk saw a mere 39 seconds of action. The Coyotes capitalized on two third-period, power-play goals to erase Edmonton's lead and steal the victory after squandering a 3-1 advantage. With Dubnyk struggling, LaBarbera hasn't been able to seize the opportunity.
Struggling Oilers to start G Jason LaBarbera | 10/26/2013 9:35 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera, who left the Arizona desert for Edmonton in the off-season, will start in place of Devan Dubnyk when the Oilers visit the Coyotes this afternoon.
ImpactThe Oilers are last in the Western Conference with a record of 3-7-1 and back-to-back road games looming. They'll take on the Kings in Los Angeles on Sunday. "You can look at the standings and start to panic or you can prepare for your next game," Edmonton coach Dallas Eakins said. "If you look after your next game, the standings look after themselves. I'll be very honest. I couldn't tell you who the top three teams are in our conference right now. All of that is minutia to me. If we can prepare and if we can have success in our next game, then the standings will look after themselves."

NewsJason LaBarbera allowed four goals on 20 shots Monday as the Oilers dropped a 4-2 decision in Washington.
ImpactA switch from Devan Dubnyk to LaBarbera doesn't seem to have helped matters for the struggling Oilers, who continued to display poor defensive coverage in this contest. Look for Dubnyk to be back in goal for Edmonton's next game.

NewsJason LaBarbera has been confirmed as Edmonton's starter for Monday's contest.

Jason LaBarbera could start on Monday | 10/14/2013 6:15 AM
NewsLook for Jason LaBarbera to get the start in goal for Edmonton Monday.
ImpactThe number one netminder in Edmonton heading into the season was Devan Dubnyk but he has struggled mightily in goal thus far with a horrendous 5.43 GAA and an equally as bad .829 save percentage. LaBarbera is 1-0 this season with a 2.70 GAA and a .897 save percentage. "I'm leaning that way," coach Dallas Eakins said when asked if LaBarbera would start against Washington. Adjust your lineup accordingly.

ImpactIt was LaBarbera's first start as an Oiler and he immediately got his first win and it was also Oilers' first win of the season. LaBarbera's save percentage was only .840 and he gave up couple of easy goals. This performance won't give him the starting job from Devan Dubnyk, but the win was encouraging for LaBarbera.
Jason LaBarbera to get the nod on Monday | 10/06/2013 4:14 PM
NewsThe Edmonton Oilers are going to start Jason LaBarbera in net against the New Jersey Devils on Monday.
Edmonton Oilers on Twitter
ImpactDevan Dubnyk's suffered from an awfully rough first two games, losing both of them and allowing 10 goals on 49 shots (.831 save percentage and 6.52 GAA). It's hard to imagine LaBarbera stealing the starting job from Dubnyk, but the team might be forced into a tough decision if the big netminder doesn't turn it around.
Jason LaBarbera makes 12 saves in win | 09/15/2013 12:03 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera stopped all 12 shots he faced in the 3-2 split-squad win against the Flames.
ImpactHe gave way to Richard Bachman midway through the second period. LaBarbera is a decent back-up, but he isn't a netminder the Oilers want to rely on for more than 15-17 games. He had a 2.64 goals-against average and .923 save percentage last season with the Coyotes. Bachman made 11 saves on 12 shots.

LaBarbera great in Yotes win | 04/28/2013 6:48 AM

NewsJason LaBarbera made 37 saves in the Phoenix Coyotes 4-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
ImpactLaBarbera faced 41 shots and made a good effort to keep the Coyotes in the game but the offense was no where to be found. He;s a half decent back up goalie but he isn't someone that should garner much fantasy attention.

NewsJason LaBarbera was on fire on Tuesday night, turning aside 39 of 40 shots in Phoenix's 3-1 victory over Los Angeles.
ImpactThe win is just LaBarbera's second since taking over for the injured Mike Smith in mid-March. He's been fairly shaky in this period, but he was absolutely dominant in this contest. There's no word yet on whether Smith will return for the Coyotes' next game on Thursday against Detroit. Stay tuned for updates.

LaBarbera solid but loses again | 03/31/2013 5:29 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera picked up a tough loss Saturday night despite making 32 saves on 34 shots through regulation and overtime, then stopping two of three in the shootout.
ImpactHis counterpart Anti Niemi stopped all three Coyotes shooters in the extra frame, ultimately being the reason LaBarbera's fine start ended in his seventh loss in nine games this season. It's hard to see him as a fantasy asset considering the way the Coyotes are slumping right now.
Jason LaBarbera will start Saturday | 03/30/2013 1:22 PM
NewsJason LaBarbera will start in Saturday's game.

ImpactLaBarbera has allowed three or more goals in each of his last three starts. With Mike Smith nursing an upper body injury, LaBarbera is the Coyotes' de facto number one goaltender.

NewsJason LaBarbera allowed four goals on 38 shots Thursday, but earned a comfortable win in a 7-4 decision over the Predators.

Jason LaBarbera fell to the Minnesota Wild | 03/28/2013 12:07 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera suffered a loss in the Phoenix Coyotes' 4-3 OT loss to the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday.
ImpactThe Coyotes' No. 2 is now 1-5-1 this season. While Mike Smith hasn't been perfect during Phoenix's losing streak so far, the team clearly needs all the help they can get. LaBarbera just isn't getting it done.
Jason LaBarbera suffers 3-2 loss to Red Wings | 03/26/2013 2:02 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera allowed three goals on 35 shots in the Coyotes 3-2 loss to the Detroit Redwings.
ImpactLaBarbera had a solid game, and will require many more of those if the Coyotes have any chance while starter is Mike Smith heals his upper body injury. The Coyotes don't provide much offensive support, combined with being a career back-up, this makes for a rather poor goalie option in fantasy leagues. Only reach for him if you're desperate for starts.
LaBarbera will start Monday with Smith out | 03/25/2013 4:10 PM
NewsJason LaBarbera will get the nod for Phoenix Monday against the visiting Detroit Red Wings.

Jason LaBarbera relieves, gives up 1 in loss | 03/22/2013 1:05 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera came in on relief for the Coyotes in the third period Thursday and made 14 saves in the team's 2-1 loss to the Canucks.
ImpactMike Smith, who made 16 saves, left after the second period with an undisclosed injury. Even though LaBarbera didn't have to enter in the middle of a period, completely cold, it's still not easy coming off the bench like this, especially in a game where Phoenix was down one. The Coyotes don't play again until Monday, so this could be tough to read until closer to that time.
Jason LaBarbera loses against Ducks | 03/07/2013 1:37 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera allowed one goal as the Phoenix Coyotes lost to the Anaheim Ducks 2-0 on Wednesday.
ImpactLaBarbera stopped 22 out of 23 shots in a rare appearance. He's 1-3-0 in six appearances, although his individual numbers are quite solid (.920 save percentage and 2.23 GAA). Regardless, he won't see many starts behind Mike Smith this season, barring injuries.
Jason LaBarbera set to play Weds. v. Ducks | 03/06/2013 6:12 PM
NewsJason LaBarbera looks like he'll get his first start since Jan. 26 Wednesday night.
Impact"The hard part is trying to keep your emotions in check the whole day and not wear yourself out because you are excited and you are anxious and you just want to go out there and play," he said. "But I've felt good in practice the past month. It's just a matter of going out there and doing what you're supposed to do." LaBarbera was the first goalie off the ice in the morning and the Coyotes host St. Louis Thursday, so it would make sense to give Mike Smith the night off.
Jason LaBarbera gives up 4 in second straight | 01/27/2013 12:17 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera yielded four goals in the Coyotes' 4-2 loss to the Kings on Saturday night.
ImpactMike Smith is still out with a lower-body injury, so LaBarbera got his second straight start and allowed four goals in his second straight game. He made 27 saves against the Kings. Phoenix is 1-4-0 this season and could really see their season spiral out of control if Smith is sidelined long-term.

NewsBackup Jason LaBarbera will get his second straight start in goal for the Phoenix Coyotes as Mike Smith continues to be out day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Jason LaBarbera struggles in 5-3 loss to SJ | 01/25/2013 5:05 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera allowed four goals on 34 shots in the Coyotes 5-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks.
ImpactLaBarbera looked sharp until the Sharks buried four goals in the 3rd period. He will assume the starting job until Mike Smith can recover from his lower body injury. The Coyotes have very poor talent up front so they rely on their defense and goaltender heavily. LaBarbera must play better than this in order for his team to have a chance at winning a game. He is only fantasy relevant to Mike Smith owners, other than that, he's waiver fodder.
Jason LaBarbera to start Thursday for 'Yotes | 01/24/2013 7:05 PM
NewsJason LaBarbera will start for Phoenix on Thursday night.
Dave Vest on Twitter
ImpactHe entered Wednesday's game in relief of Mike Smith during the first period after Smith went down with a lower-body injury. It's unclear how long Smith will be sidelined for, but for now LaBarbera appears as though he will be "the man" in the Coyotes' crease.
Jason LaBarbera nearly perfect in relief | 01/24/2013 1:52 AM
NewsAfter Mike Smith left with a lower-body injury, the Phoenix Coyotes didn't miss a beat with Jason LaBarbera in net.
ImpactHe stopped all but one of 22 shots in 49 minutes of relief work. The Coyotes might be a little nervous rolling with the mediocre 36-year-old backup long-term, yet betting against Dave Tippett seems like a dangerous proposition. If nothing else, Smith owners might be wise to handcuff "The Barber" for the short-term.
LaBarbera ready for larger role this season | 01/16/2013 1:30 AM
NewsJason LaBarbera is aware that he may receive a larger workload during this shortened season in relief of Phoenix Coyotes' starting goaltender Mike Smith.
Impact"Back-to-backs aren't usually the toughest situations for a starting goalie, it's more about the stretches of three games in four nights or four games in six nights," Coyotes' goaltending coach Sean Burke said. "That's really where you rely more on your second goalie. Your number one goalie can do a lot of the back-to-backs, but when you get into those longer stretches, you need your other guy to come in and win games for you." Fantasy owners shouldn't be too weary of the effect of this news on the number of Smith's starts. He still remains a top fantasy option in net.
