Mike Ribeiro opens up about recent problems | 07/15/2014 10:47 PM
NewsMike Ribeiro admitted that he was dealing with marital problems last season that he believes impacted his performance.
The Nashville Tennessean
ImpactRibeiro said that those issues resulted in him not being committed to his job with the Arizona Coyotes. The Coyotes inked him to a four-year, $22 million contract last summer, but GM Don Maloney decided to buy him out in June, citing "real behavioral issues" that the team "could not tolerate." Ribeiro is now a member of the Nashville Predators on a one-year, $1.05 million contract. "I had a chance to really focus on myself and really learn about myself," Ribeiro said. "That's why I'm comfortable. What Mr. Maloney said - it shocked some people, my wife wasn't happy about it. I sat down, thought about it. I'm comfortable with myself now. I'm open with what happened or didn't happen with our marriage issues, and really I think I'm comfortable with it and not trying to hide it." If he can put all this behind him, then Ribeiro would be a serious candidate to record 60-70 points in 2014-15.
Nashville signs Mike Ribeiro to one-year deal | 07/15/2014 12:03 PM
NewsThe Nashville Predators have signed Mike Ribeiro to a one-year, $1.05 million contract.
ImpactThe fact that Ribeiro will earn just $1.05 million after commanding a four-year, $22 million contract last summer speaks volumes to how severe his fall from grace has been. Ribeiro didn't have a particularly good season, but the Coyotes said they bought him out due to "behavioral issues" rather than performance ones. Perhaps that scared off other suitors, but the Predators needed a center that was worthy of playing alongside James Neal and when he's at his best, Ribeiro certainly qualifies. This could be a big bounce back season for him.

ImpactRibeiro agreed to a four-year, $22 million contract with Arizona last summer, but they bought him out after just one season. They cited "real behavioral issues" that the team "could not tolerate" as the reason. While that's concerning, Ribeiro is typically a solid top-six forward and would be a fine addition to most teams.

ImpactInteresting. Ribeiro ended up spending just one season with the Coyotes after signing a four-year, $22 million contract. It's worth noting that while the Coyotes are freeing up some cap space, they were not expected to come near the ceiling in the first place.
Coyotes buy out rest of Mike Ribeiro's deal | 06/27/2014 4:12 PM
NewsMike Ribeiro has been bought out by the Phoenix Coyotes.
Coyotes.nhl.com on Twitter
ImpactRibeiro only ended up spending a single season with Phoenix after they inked him to a four-year, $22 million contract. During that time, he scored 16 goals and 47 points in 80 games. This is a regular buyout as opposed to a compliance one because Ribeiro wasn't eligible for the latter, but it's moot anyways because the Coyotes aren't expected to come close to the ceiling. This was likely a move to cut costs rather than create space.

ImpactOr Arizona Coyotes, as the case will be Friday night. Ribeiro comes with a $5.5 million annual cap hit through 2016-17, but the Coyotes aren't expected to come close to the ceiling anyways, so this would be more to save money than free up cap space. He scored 16 goals and 47 points in 80 games in 2013-14.

NewsMike Ribeiro's first season with the Phoenix Coyotes left plenty to be desired.
Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette
ImpactRibeiro had 16 goals and 47 points in 80 games in 2013-14. That's a steep decline after recording 49 points in 48 contests during the shortened season. "I think it was a lot of things," Ribeiro said. "It's not just about hockey but a lot of things. Never having my groove, never found it. It was just a hard season for me. I think it was one of my worst seasons. But . I don't believe it can get worse. That's a positive. Next year I can come here and have a better season."

ImpactHe has also been a healthy scratch of late, as coach Dave Tippett is looking for the right mix as the Coyotes are only one point out of a playoff spot despite losing their last four games in a row. "Really, 'Ribs' has to put the work in. That's the bottom line," Tippett said. "Everybody likes to rely on other players around them, but you gotta put the work in yourself first before you start looking at wingers."
Ribeiro, Morris will sit again on Thursday | 03/27/2014 6:42 PM
NewsMike Ribeiro will be a healthy scratch for a second straight game on Thursday.
ImpactJoining him in the press box again will be veteran defenseman Derek Morris. "We're trying to win, right, so it's less about who's not in and more about who's in," coach Dave Tippett said. "We're trying to play a certain way, a competitive way, and we've gotta come back with another good effort like we did the other night." Ribeiro has 15 goals and 45 points in 72 games this season.
Mike Ribeiro benched on Friday | 03/02/2014 9:17 AM
NewsCoach Dave Tippett benched Mike Ribeiro on Friday after he took a misconduct for arguing with an official.

ImpactRibeiro was given the 10 minute misconduct at the 16:10 mark of the second period and never saw the ice again, save for him skating across the ice once his misconduct was over. "He's had a couple of situations like that where his emotions have got the better of him," Tippett said. "Those are things we continue to pound away that we've got to take out of our game." Ribeiro has 14 goals and 41 points in 60 games and his misdeeds on Friday jumped his penalty minute count to 44.

ImpactRibeiro was shipped to Washington in the summer of 2012, but because of the lockout, Eastern and Western Conference teams didn't play each other in the shortened regular season. Ribeiro became an unrestricted free agent after one season with the Capitals and signed with Phoenix. It didn't turn out to be a particularly memorable night for him though as he had a minus-two rating in 20:19 minutes of ice time.
Mike Ribeiro gets two points in Yotes' win | 02/01/2014 10:48 PM
NewsMike Ribeiro registered a goal and an assist in the Coyotes' 3-1 win over the Penguins on Saturday night.
ImpactRibeiro hasn't adjusted well to playing in Phoenix as he has just 14 goals and 39 points this season, a point pace that would be his worst in seven seasons. The pass-first center has the ability to be close to a point-per game player, so don't give up on him just yet. Radim Vrbata and Zbynek Michalek potted the other goals.

NewsMike Ribeiro scored a goal and registered two assists in Phoenix's 6-2 victory over Edmonton.
Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette

Ribeiro garnering plenty of PP time in PHX | 11/17/2013 1:56 AM
NewsMike Ribeiro ranks 11th among all NHL forwards in terms of power-play time on ice.
ImpactRibeiro has garnered a total of 82:18 in man advantage ice-time so far this season which ranks along the same lines as Joe Pavelski, Chris Kunitz, Eric Staal, Claude Giroux and Corey Perry. The downside is that his six power-play points ranks 28th among all NHL forwards. Ribeiro appears in a whopping 70.9 percent of the Coyotes' power play chances, which operates at the sixth best efficiency in the league. He's probably just a bit unlucky at the moment, and if he continues to post similar numbers as he currently does, his power-play production should skyrocket.
Before bolting, Mike Ribeiro gave Ovie advice | 11/09/2013 11:50 AM
NewsBefore he jumped from the Washington Capitals to sign with the Phoenix Coyotes as a free agent, Mike Ribeiro gave superstar Alex Ovechkin some interesting advice.
Impact"I actually told him to stop shooting high and try to go 5-hole a few times," Ribeiro said. "And he started shooting 5-hole. The thing there is that a lot of people are scared to talk to him because he's such a big [star] and I don't really care. I was just telling him what I thought and it helped him to change a bit, to give different looks to goalies." Ribeiro faces his former Washington mates today for the first time.

Two points for Mike Ribeiro in Coyotes' rout | 10/19/2013 11:55 PM
NewsMike Ribeiro had his best game with the Phoenix Coyotes Saturday as he scored twice to lead his new team to a 5-2 rout of the visiting Detroit Red Wings.
ImpactThe goals were Ribeiro's second and third of the season. Ribeiro signed with the Coyotes as a free agent before the season. Goalie Mike Smith, incidentally, was credited with the Coyotes' fifth goal on the night, with one second left on the clock. Needless to say, it was his first, and probably his last, goal of the season. Other Phoenix scorers were Martin Hanzal (second) and Antoine Vermette (third). Mikkel Boedker notched two assists for the winners.

ImpactHe has spoken with and skated with Coyotes captain Shane Doan and the two of them are already starting to develop a good rapport. "It's always nice to know where players like to have the puck, and I like to know where they like to shoot," Ribeiro said. "It's nice to be able to practice with them." Ribeiro and Doan will probably be linemates when the regular season opens.
Ribeiro 'surprised' Caps didn't re-sign him | 07/06/2013 11:55 AM
NewsMike Ribeiro was "surprised" the Capitals didn't re-sign him.
ImpactRibeiro seemed to want to stay in the D.C. area long-term. "I was surprised," Ribeiro told reporters after Friday's signing. "I moved there, moved my family too. My thinking was, if I had a great season they'd keep me there, or find a way to keep me there, but obviously we couldn't. Once I confirmed they couldn't re-sign me, my first option was Phoenix. And that's what we went for."
Mike Ribeiro: Tippett factored in decision | 07/06/2013 8:38 AM
NewsThe relationship between center Mike Ribeiro and coach Dave Tippett is one the newest Coyote is happy to renew.
Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette
ImpactThe two parties are familiar with each other dating back to their time together in Dallas and Tippett reportedly had been trying to recruit Ribeiro since he arrived in Phoenix. "He's got unbelievable poise with the puck," Tippett said. "He can find people, make great plays in traffic and he just has the ability to hold it and make the right play." The addition should help the Coyotes improve on their anemic power play, but expecting a repeat of last season's performance from Ribeiro would be a stretch.

ImpactRibeiro had 13 goals and 49 points in 46 games with the Washington Capitals last season. He'll be a big boost to the Coyotes offensively, but he's not likely to replicate his 2013 success when it comes to point-per-game production. Look for him to get about 60-70 points in 2013-14. It's worth adding that this move also reunites Ribeiro with his former bench boss in Dallas, Dave Tippett.

Ribeiro, Caps aren't making contract progress | 06/05/2013 10:38 AM
NewsMike Ribeiro and the Washington Capitals don't appear to be heading toward agreeing to a new deal.
ImpactAgent Don Meehan said Tuesday that there "aren't any updates" on contract talks with unrestricted free agency drawing closer. The two sides have expressed their interest in staying together, but it doesn't look like they've made any ground since Ribeiro rejected a three-year, $14 million offer in March. It may be tough for the Capitals to fit what he wants into their salary cap, so he might be allowed to test the open market on July 5.

NewsMike Ribeiro reiterated that he's seeking a four- or five-year contract this offseason.
ImpactThe 33-year-old center is coming off a five-year, $25 million deal, and says that the length of the contract is more important to him than the money. "If I can stay in the city and retire here. It's more about the kids. If I could stay in the city until they go to college," Ribeiro said. Ribeiro doesn't necessarily expect to make a decision before July 5, the start of free agency, though the Capitals will be in the mix if he hits the market. He had 13 goals and 36 assists this season.

Mike Ribeiro is exicted to return to playoffs | 04/30/2013 7:45 PM
NewsMike Ribeiro will be back in the postseason for the first time since 2008 when Washington begins their first-round series against the New York Rangers Thursday.
Impact"It's just going to be exciting. It's been a few years," said Ribeiro. "The first time you don't make the playoffs, you're kind of happy. You have a longer summer. But like four times in a row now, four times, four summers, it's long. You're out for like seven months; it's pretty long. And obviously this year was even longer for me, from April to all the way now. I'm just anxious to go and play and bring some emotions up." The playmaking center registered 36 assists and 49 points in 48 games with the Capitals this season and he's eligible to be an unrestricted free agent this summer. A good showing in the playoffs could land him that long-term deal he is seeking.

Mike Ribeiro wants a long-term deal from Caps | 03/28/2013 6:45 PM
NewsMike Ribeiro reiterated after Thursday's practice that he wants to stay with the Washington Capitals on a long-term contract.
Impact"I think I've said that from the get-go. I don't want to move all the time," he said. "If I get traded before the end of this year and then move again at the beginning of the next year - So we'll see. It's part of the business and we'll see where that goes." According to Renaud Lavoie of RDS, Ribeiro turned down a three-year, $14 million offer on Wednesday night. He is seeking a four- or five-year deal and could be dealt prior to the trade deadline next week.

NewsMike Ribeiro rejected a three-year contract offer from the Capitals but he still wants to stay in Washington, according to RDS' Renaud Lavoie.
Renaud Lavoie on Twitter
ImpactRibeiro told The Washington Times that he prefers a "long-term" contract, which to him means at least four years. The center, who has thrived (11 goals, 24 points) in his first year with the Capitals, is in the final season of a five-year, $25 million deal. Handing out a contract that could top that one -- at least in dollar value -- is a risky being that Ribeiro is also 33 years old.
Caps face decision to sign or trade Ribeiro | 03/26/2013 10:56 AM
NewsMike Ribeiro would like to sign a long-term contract to remain with the Washington Capitals, but that hasn't stopped his name from surfacing in trade rumors heading into the deadline next week.
ImpactHe can become an unrestricted free agent this summer and the Capitals aren't quite sure what to do with him yet. Ribeiro has been a great addition to Washington this season with a team-leading 34 points (10 goals, 24 assists) in 32 games. He has provided the club with some much-needed depth at center, but his price tag may be too high with expensive contracts of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Green already in the fold. Additionally, signing him to a four- or five-year deal that will carry him until he turns 37 or 38 years old may not be appealing either.
