Scouting Report: Is widely considered to be the best all-around defenseman available for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Has been compared to former Tigers rearguard Jay Bouwmeester; though he doesn't have the same skating stride as Bouwmeester, he's more aggressive and uses his frame with more consistency. Finished second among WHL defensemen in scoring in 2003-04, and led all WHL blueliners with 21 goals. Possesses a hard, accurate shot from the point, which is especially effective on the power play. Plays with tremendous poise for a young defender. Was one of the last cuts for the 2004 Canadian WJC squad.
Impact: A mild surprise here, considering the fact the Blackhawks already boast several quality defense prospects and have a chronic need for scoring forwards. That said, coach Brian Sutter may have had some influence on the selection of Barker--a true Sutter-type player. Chicago is now expected to move towards selecting forwards with the rest of their early picks. It'll be a few years before they'll know whether or not taking Barker at No. 3--instead of a scoring forward such as Lauri Tukonen or Andrew Ladd--will come back to haunt the 'Hawks.

Scouting Report: Increased his scoring total by 50 points in his second OHL season in 2003-04, and became one of the best players on one of the league's top teams--the Knights. Outplayed fellow 2004 first-round draft prospect and teammate Robbie Schremp in the OHL playoffs. Can line up both at center and right wing, though his NHL future probably lies up the middle on the second or third line. Is not big but isn't shy about sticking his nose into high-traffic areas. Always works the corners well. Hails from the same hometown (Mimico, Ontario) as current NHLer Brendan Shanahan.
Impact: After going with the best defenseman available (Cam Barker) in Round 1, the 'Hawks take the diminutive but talented Bolland with their second selection. Bolland was expected to go in the first round, so consider pick No. 32 to be somewhat of a steal for Chicago. He has the ability to play a two-way game, so don't be surprised if he challenges for a roster spot in the Windy City soon.

Scouting Report: Has an imposing build and projects to be an NHL power forward. Lacks consistency and has a tendency to disappear for long stretches. Improved his production by 13 goals and nine points in his second OHL season with the 67's in 2003-04. Was also more physical, as he racked up 72 more penalty minutes in only nine more games than the previous season. Still needs a lot of development time and must prove he can dominate junior hockey before embarking on a pro career. Is considered a project, and could boom or bust in the NHL--there is no middle ground.
Impact: The 'Hawks hope Bickell can be a late-bloomer in the same manner as current left wing Eric Daze. Bickell has first-round ability but lacks drive and the ability to show up every night. If he ever wants to put on the large Indian head under Brian Sutter's watch, that aspect of Bickell's game must improve.

Scouting Report: Performed very well for Canada at the 2004 World under-18 tournament in Minsk (7 GP, 1-4-5, -1, 6 PIM). Split time in the OHL between the eventual champion Guelph Storm and Windsor in 2003-04; he registered 10 assists and 13 points in 16 regular-season games with the Spitfires following a trade. Plays a sound two-way game and displays excellent creativity on the ice. Appeared in the 2004 Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects Game. Projects to be a two-way NHL pivot, capable of playing on the third line--or maybe even the second unit. Is also adept at playing on special teams.
Impact: The 'Hawks continue to stockpile CHL talent. While David Bolland is more of an offensive forward, Garlock projects to be more of a two-way center as a pro. The Chicago system is somewhat lacking in quality pivots, so adding Garlock at No. 45 helps the situation.

Scouting Report: Was a first-time regular with HC Sparta Praha, a power in the Czech Republic Extraliga, in 2003-04 and saw ice time in 13 playoff games--to go along with 34 games in the regular season. Also performed very well for his country at the 2004 World under-18 tournament in Minsk, Belarus (7 GP, 3-3-6, +6, 6 PIM). Owns excellent hands and an accurate shot. Knows where to go in order to score goals. Lacks ideal size and may have trouble on smaller ice surfaces in North America. Plays a style similar to countrymen and current NHLers Milan Hejduk and Radim Vrbata.
Impact: If given time and opportunity, the slick Czech should help Chicago in the goal-scoring department. Sindel was projected to be a borderline first-round selection, so Chicago management did well to secure his rights at No. 54. Don't be surprised if he out-produces the Blackhawks' other second-round picks down the road.

Scouting Report: Has the makings of an NHL power forward but has been woefully inconsistent in his first two OHL seasons. Missed all but 15 games in his rookie campaign (2002-03) because of injury, but returned to health in 2003-04. Finished with the best time in the 60-foot dash in skills testing at the 2004 CHL top prospects game. Was impressive for Canada at the 2004 World under-18 tournament (7 GP, 1-2-3, 26 PIM). Recorded the fourth-best point total on the Generals during the regular season, but was a no-show in the first round of the OHL playoffs.
Impact: The 'Hawks have added two similar left-wingers in Bryan Bickell (No. 41 overall) and Berti. Both are potential power forwards from the OHL, but both have lacked consistency so far in their young hockey careers. Hopefully, at least one of them can fulfill all of the potential within his big frame.

Scouting Report: Finished second among Spitfires defensemen in 2003-04 with 11 goals and 26 points, and fourth on the team in penalty minutes (91) in 68 games. Owns a solid frame, a nasty streak and decent offensive upside. Can be a factor on the power play, thanks to a heavy shot from the point. Struggled badly in the first round of the 2004 OHL playoffs against the London Knights (4 GP, 1-0-1, -8). Needs to tighten up his defensive-zone coverage in order to become an effective pro rearguard. Dropped 40 spots (from No. 31 to 71) between Central Scouting's mid-term rankings and their final results, among North American skaters.

Scouting Report: Skates very well and owns sound two-way instincts. Owns good size, as well as plenty of grit and character. Is not much of a finisher, and lacks top-end offensive talent. Was named to both the 2004 Czech Republic WJC and World under-18 tournament squads, but totaled two goals and three points in 14 games against top competition. Split 2003-04 between Sparta Praha's junior and elite-league clubs. Though he went pointless in his first 13 games in the Extraliga, he notched 10 goals and 20 points in 21 games in the junior ranks. Projects to be a third-line, industrious winger at the NHL level.

Scouting Report: Finished tied for third (with Predators 2003 first-round pick Ryan Suter) among Badgers freshmen in scoring in 2003-04. Displays plenty of playmaking savvy and creativity. Is not afraid of going into the corners and getting his nose dirty. Is somewhat undersized for the pro game, and will need to prove he can continue to put up points as he moves up the ladder. Will likely spend three more years at Wisconsin.

Scouting Report: Finished third on the Warriors in scoring in 2003-04--his second full season in the WHL--and fifth on the club in penalty minutes. Plays an up-and-down style and likes to bang bodies in the corners. Projects to be a role player in the pros, most likely as a right wing on either the third or fourth line. Must work extra hard to put up numbers, because he lacks top-end talent.

Scouting Report: Finished fifth on the Cougars in scoring in 2003-04, and sixth on the club with 122 penalty minutes. Works very hard every time he's on the ice, and can be used in all game situations. May not have enough high-end scoring ability to play a top-six role in the pro ranks. Needs to add more bulk to his 6-1 frame in order to better handle a higher level of competition.
